How to create a news article in the Student Guide

Note! Add news to the Student Guide only if:

• Your news concerns a sufficiently large student group (if your news concerns, for example, a single program, this is not the right channel for it)
• Your news concerns students (do not add news "just in case")
• Your news is not an advertisement – the goal on this platform is to report news, not to advertise
   

When adding a news article to the Student Guide, click "Content" in the top left corner and select "Add content" from the drop-down menu, then choose "News". You can also use the news article template for cloning.

Use keywords (tags) to ensure your news reaches the right student group. The secondary tags and category for the Student Guide are predefined (more information below). 

Remember to  tick the "Student Guide" box at the bottom of the page, as this will make the news appear in the Student Guide news feeds. When selecting the publicity for your news article remember that  all news intended for the Student Guide are public for everyone.

If you want to create news for both aalto.fi and the Student Guide, please read the detailed instructions below. 

Basic information

• Language: choose the original language (editing language) for the news article (English / Finnish / Swedish). Remember that news concerning students must be in all three languages.
• Title: Give a headline for the news article. Start with the most important keywords and summarize the content. Remember that this affects the search results.
• Summary*: Write a short introduction about the news article (this will be shown when the news article is lifted up somewhere across the aalto.fi site, but will not appear on your page). Avoid jargon and difficult terminology.
• Lead text*: The lead text should complement the headline – tell the most important points in the beginning. Avoid jargon and difficult terminology. A good lead text makes the reader want to know more and keep reading. Don't copy the exact same text as in the summary field to the lead text. This will have a negative impact on search engine optimisation and thus to the findability of your content.
• Main image: add an appealing main image for the news article (don't use a picture that includes text e.g. infographic as a main image). Choose a picture that supports the news article content. File size of 1 MB is sufficient, as the image quality (in pixels) is what counts. Always use horizontal images as the main image.
  The main image of the news article can also be hidden; it appers when the news article is lifted up somewhere across the aalto.fi site, but will not appear on your page.

Relates to

• Do not select anything in this field unless you want your news article to appear outside of the Student Guide as well. If the news also concerns other target groups (e.g., staff), you can select multiple hubs here.

Category 

• Select "Studies" unless you want the news to also appear in other news feeds outside the Student Guide.

Primary and secondary tags

Primary tags: Do not select anything in this category.

Secondary tags: Select the student group that the news article is aimed at. You can use multiple tags. 

• All students (appears in the news feeds for all programmes; note: including doctoral programmes; do not use unless it concerns all students)
  • If you use the secondary tag "All students," you do not need other tags, as this will make the news appear on the front page of all programmes.
• All Bachelor's programmes (appears in the news feeds for all bachelor's programmes)
• All Master's Programmes (appears in the news feeds for all master's programs)
• All Doctoral Programmes (appears in the news feeds for all doctoral programs)
• All English Bachelor's Programmes (appears in the news feeds for all English bachelor's programs)
• International Business, Mikkeli (appears only in the news feed for the Mikkeli bachelor’s program)
• [School], Bachelor's Programmes (e.g., ARTS, Bachelor’s Programme)
• [School], Master's Programmes
• [School], Doctoral Programmes

Schools: ARTS, BIZ, CHEM, ELEC, ENG, SCI

Scheduling

• Fill in the publication time for the news or schedule the publication if desired. You can also leave this field blank; the default publication time will be: 00:00:00.

Remember to select the visibility of the news in the Student Guide

Tick the "Student Guide" option at the end of the page so that the news appears in the Student Guide. See the image below.

Publish

Finally, save your news article by clicking "Save" at the top right corner of the page. Then publish it by clicking "Publish" at the top of the page.

Creating a news article both for the Student Guide and for aalto.fi

If you are creating a news article for aalto.fi and want it to also appear in the Student Guide (or vice versa), tick the 'Student Guide public' option at the bottom of the page. This option will automatically tick the 'Student Guide' option above it as well. Please note that all news articles  in the Student Guide must be public and available in three languages.
