Tags and metadata on aalto.fi

Tags and other metadata help categorise content by topic (tags), define which hub a page belongs to (Content type) and provide information for listing filters and automatic liftups (tags, Relates to and Category). This page explains the purpose of each aalto.fi metadata field.

Aalto.fi pages have fields for different metadata, such as ‘Tags’, ‘Category’, ‘Relates to’ and ‘Authors’. This page will explain the role of each metadata type.

Some metadata fields are optional, meaning that they can be left empty. However, it is still recommended that you always add tags to your content.

Tags (for most content types)

Tags categorise content by topic. Tags should reflect all the main topics that are related to the content. For example, a news article on sustainability should have the tag ‘sustainability’.

The main use of tags is to filter content in automatic liftups. They also have a small weight in the internal site search.

Automatic tag selection

You can utilise automatic tag selection for selecting tags:

  1. Create a new page as usual and add the necessary content and components to the page.
  2. Once the page content is ready, click the 'Generate tags' button in the right-hand side bar. AI will automatically select suitable tags based on the content of the page.
  3. Review the automatically selected tags and check that they are suitable for the page. Add or remove tags manually as needed.

Requesting a new tag

If you cannot find a suitable tag, you can request a new tag from Communications services:

  1. Open the editing view of a page you would like to add the new tag to.
  2. Scroll to section 'Request new tag' on the right-hand side bar and enter the new tag. Click the 'Request' button to confirm the request.
  3. If possible, add translations for the tag as well.
  4. Wait for the tag to be approved.

Once you have requested a new tag, it will be added to your page as a pending tag. Once the tag has been approved by Communications services, the pending tag will automatically turn into an approved tag on the page. If the tag is not approved, it will be automatically removed from the page. The most common reason for rejecting a tag request is that a similar tag already exists on the site.

Content home (for articles and research groups)

Content home determines which hub the page belongs to and also defines its URL. For example, a subpage for a department should have the department’s hub as its Content home, so that users can see the relationship between the two when accessing the page.

For some content types the Content home is automatically determined. For example, the Content home of a Service page is automatically the Services hub, in which all Service pages will appear. The Content home of Events and News is automatically the Aalto University Events and News hubs respectively.

Content home can also be used for filtering content in automatic article liftups.

Category (for news and events)

News pages and Event pages are sorted by their Category. The selected Category (or Categories) does not affect the page URL, but is used for filtering content in advanced searches, such as the main news and even listings, and automatic liftups.

Category can be used for filtering content in automatic news and event liftups.

Relates to (for most content types)

Relates to tells the system that your page is linked to other hubs or research groups.

Relates to can also be used for filtering content in automatic liftups.

Automatic liftups

Automatic liftup components are used to create automatically updating feeds of articles, news or events. Automatic liftups are filtered based on metadata, such as tags and categories. Learn how to create automatic liftups.
