Editing in Panopto
With the Panopto editor, you can cut video, add slides, subtitles and other content directly in your browser.
Adding and sharing Panopto videos in MyCourses and elsewhere
You can add Panopto videos to MyCourses in three different ways. Choose the method according to your needs – all options restrict viewing rights to students enrolled in the course.
1. Add video using the “Panopto video” activity
This is the simplest way to add a video to the course page:
- Select Add activity or resource and choose Panopto video.
- The activity allows you to choose a video from Panopto.
- Viewing rights are automatically restricted to course participants.
This option is best if you want to add videos as separate sections in the course, e.g. weekly.
2. Embed video alongside text or material (Panopto button)
You can embed a Panopto video, for example, in the text field of an assignment, page or material as follows:
- Add the Panopto block to the course first by selecting Add block > Panopto from the menu in the top left corner of the course.
- Once the block is added, click Provision course from the block – this creates a course-specific folder in Panopto and activates the tools.
- After this, the Panopto button will appear in MyCourses' text editor, allowing you to easily search and embed videos directly into text fields.
- If you do not want to show the Panopto block to students, you can hide it (settings “Visibility: No”).
Note:
You do not need to separately adjust viewing rights for embedded videos, even if the video is located outside the course folder. Videos added with the Panopto button automatically inherit the viewing rights: the student only gets the right to view that specific video.
3. Panopto block – automatic video view on the course page
When the Panopto block is added to the course and the course is “provisioned”, the following happens:
- A folder named after the course is created in Panopto automatically.
- All videos you save or copy into this folder are automatically visible on the course page Panopto block for viewing.
- Course participants automatically receive viewing rights to this folder.
Sharing videos outside MyCourses
You can share your recordings with a link or embed code
- Always ensure that the video viewing rights correspond to the sharing method and target audience.
- If you share the video embedded or with a link to people other than course participants, check the Share settings in Panopto.

How to share video editing rights
It is not possible to directly grant editing rights to individual videos in Panopto. If you want someone else to edit the video (e.g. cut, add slides or subtitles), the video must be moved or copied to a folder where the editor has the Creator role.
⚠️ Note: Editing rights cannot be shared for videos located in the My Folder. Create a separate folder or use the course folder.
How to share editing rights:
- Create a new folder in Panopto or use the course folder (not My Folder).
- Move or copy the video to this folder.
- Open the Share settings of the folder.
- Add the person's Aalto email address and select the Creator role.
- Save the changes.
Once the person is added with the Creator role to the folder, they can edit all videos contained within it.
With the Creator role, the user can edit, share, and add new videos to the folder. Ensure that there are no unnecessary editing rights left for others.
Video submission in MyCourses (Panopto‑assignment)
You can collect video submissions from students directly through MyCourses using Panopto Student Submission. This creates a submission folder in the course where students can save their videos without separate sharing settings.
For teachers: Create a Panopto video assignment
- Enable editing mode in the course.
- Select Add an activity or resource > Panopto Student Submission.
- Give the assignment a name, add instructions, and a deadline if necessary.
- Save the assignment.
Students' videos are automatically saved in the Student Submissions subfolder of the course folder and are visible only to the teacher.
Note: Using the video assignment does not require separate video sharing or permissions adjustment. Panopto and MyCourses handle this automatically.
Panopto guide: How to Use Video Assignments
For students: Submit a video to a Panopto assignment
- Open the Panopto Student Submission task in the course.
- Click Add Panopto Submission.

- Record a new video directly in the browser (Panopto Capture)
- Once the video is uploaded or recorded, click Insert.
- Ensure the video appears in the submission and press Submit.
