Presemo - Teaching activation tool
In shortly
- With Presemo, you can collect questions, comments, and answers in real-time, engage participants, and guide discussions both in the classroom and online.
- Presemo works excellently in face-to-face, remote, and hybrid sessions.
- Presemo is anonymous, which lowers the threshold for participation but requires clear rules and moderation.
What can Presemo be used for?
In teaching
Presemo lowers students' threshold for asking and commenting, even in large courses. You can collect questions and feedback before, during, or after the teaching session and show results collectively in the Screen view. This supports interaction between the teacher and students and also stimulates discussions among students. Multiple-choice polls allow quick understanding checks and adjustments to teaching as needed. Highlights in the discussion tool, word clouds, and "likes" help identify essential themes and highlight the most important messages.
In events and workshops
Presemo is also suitable for internal events and occasions at Aalto. You can collect participants' views, prioritize options, and conduct real-time indicative votes. Anonymous participation encourages the sharing of ideas and questions. If you wish, you can limit visibility solely to the content added by the instructor to either indicate progress or concentrate discussions. Presemo works well in hybrid and remote scenarios, where participants can respond from their devices.
How to use Presemo
Session/room creation
- Open the browser and go to presemo.aalto.fi.
- Enter your session name (this forms the participation address), select your language and PIN code (at least 4 digits, recommended 6+), and add your email address.
- Submit the form. You'll receive email links to Control, Web, Screen, and Stage views, and instructions for deleting the session.
- You can also directly access presemo.aalto.fi/session_name/control.
Views
- Control (presemo.aalto.fi/session_name/control): Instructor's view for creating and publishing activities, managing settings, and moderation.
- Web (presemo.aalto.fi/session_name): Participant's view in the browser (phone or computer), where responses and participation occur. This address is given to participants.
- Screen (presemo.aalto.fi/session_name/screen): Result view displayed in the room or shared online; control is from Control.
- Stage (presemo.aalto.fi/session_name/stage): Less frequently used, lighter control view intended for the presenter.
Activities and features
- Chat – Initiate dialogue and collect anonymous questions and comments via chat. You can choose whether messages are published directly or through moderation. Features available include likes, replying to messages, and word cloud view for presenting results. You can highlight important messages in the Screen view, and remove individual messages from visibility if needed.
- Poll & PollPlus – Multiple-choice questions are effective for assessing understanding and conducting quick surveys. Results update in real-time. PollPlus supports the selection of multiple options and changing opinions.
- Voting – Participants can create text options for voting, or voting can be restricted to options added solely by the instructor. Responses can also be evaluated using a five-point Likert scale, suitable for peer review and ideation.
- Scatter / Quadrant (beta) – Define two axes for participants to set their position according to results, visualised in a quadrant. Scattering is a beta feature to be considered for use depending on the situation.
- Divider – Use Divider to group room activities, e.g., for different phases of an event. Divider allows you to organise or "bundle" activities in the control view.
Saving results and managing activities
- Report: Copy the session results to text format from the Control view's top Report option (copy–paste).
- Duplicate, clear, delete: Each activity's gear menu allows you to duplicate the activity, clear selection, voting, and discussion results, or delete the activity.
Equipment and space
Using Presemo is possible with one projector, but using two projectors is smoother (one for Presemo, another for slides). You'll need a device for the Screen view and for controlling (Control). Participants use their mobile devices or laptops, and the room must have a functioning WLAN (Aalto Open or Eduroam at Aalto). In larger events (over 50 active participants), it's advisable to reserve a participation assistant for moderation and highlights. Presemo is suitable for events of all sizes.
Anonymity and moderation: Since Presemo is anonymous, remember to tell participants the rules of engagement and use moderation when necessary. You can keep the chat open temporarily and quickly remove disruptive messages. Anonymity encourages participation – remind participants that they can express their thoughts on the platform, but should do so respectfully.
