MyCourses: Scheduler and Attendance

With the Attendance activity, students' participation in a teaching session can be recorded. In the Scheduler, the teacher offers individual or group meeting times for the students.

MyCourses activity
In short

In short

  • Attendance is used for recording participation in lectures or exercises.
  • Scheduler is used for booking times with the teacher or assistant, or for booking presentation times for individuals or groups.
  • Grades can be given for both activities.

Attendance activity

You can mark students' attendance using the Attendance activity (present, absent, late). You can set up the activity so that students can mark their own attendance.

Note! The default grade for the activity is 100. Attendance shows a partial grade in the course's Grades tab until all sessions' attendance has been marked. Students see their correct grade in the Attendance view all the time.

Tips for use:

  • You can hide the Attendance activity and open it for a short time at the beginning of the lesson for students to register their attendance.
  • You can specify the number of minutes after the session starts during which students can mark their attendance.

Adding attendance step by step:

  1. Open Add activity or resource + sign and select Attendance activity.
  2. Provide a name and description (e.g. "Mark your attendance at the session here").
  3. In the Grading section, enter the total grade, which will be transferred to the Grades page. Attendance can also be used without grading. Save.
  4. Add sessions (lectures, exercises etc.) from the Add session button(black button under the activity title).
    • You can create multiple sessions at once from "Multiple sessions", for example, create all Monday lectures from 9-11 at once.
  5. In the Students' own recording section, choose whether students are allowed to mark their own attendance. You can also set a password that students must enter correctly to register their attendance.
  6. Then create the options for marking attendance in the More tab's section "Status set". You can edit options and add or remove them. By default, they are as follows: Present, Late, Excused, and Absent. You can set the duration for which they can select a certain option after the event begins.
  7. Mark the absent option as "Set automatically if not registered". NOTE! For attendance to work, each student must have a mark for each event.

Fine-tuning Attendance:

By default, each session gives 2 points for attendance, 1 point for being late or for an excused absence (Excused) from the session, and 0 points for absence. These session points are scaled to the grade specified in the function settings and displayed in the gradebook.

Scheduler activity

In a Scheduler, you can create bookable time slots for students, for example, to book presentation times, guidance times, or meeting times. You can define available time slots and schedule appointments for individual students or for groups. You can comment and make notes. You can also grade the appointments, which will appear in the gradebook.

The Scheduler activity can enhance communication and time management between teachers and students, particularly when personal guidance or meetings are required.

Creating a Scheduler:

  1. Open Add an activity or resource + icon, and select Scheduler activity.
  2. Provide a name and description (for example, Book time for guidance/your presentation).
  3. You can create individual time slots or specific times on chosen days.
  4. Making a booking: Students can make a booking by selecting a suitable time for themselves. This booking is visible to both the teacher and the student.
  5. Management: You can manage bookings, see who has reserved each time slot, and modify bookings as needed. Additionally, you can set restrictions, such as limiting the number of sessions each student can book.
  6. Notifications: MyCourses can send notifications about bookings and reminders for upcoming meetings, helping both teachers and students stay informed about scheduled appointments.
