Searching and using Aalto Repository's content

The public content of the Aalto Repository (Aalto Repo) is available for search, viewing, and downloading through the system's search portal. Some public content is also available in the national Finna search service. This page provides detailed instructions on searching for materials in the Aalto Repository, usage rights, descriptive information, and citation practices.

Aalto Repository search portal

Aalto Repository can be searched at https://repo.aalto.fi. A beta version of the search portal is under development and has been released for public use.

In the search portal, you can search the system's public content, which currently includes mainly media and document materials permanently preserved in the Aalto University Archive collections.

Browsing:

Browse by material group: Materials are categorized into broad groups such as Student Works, Teaching Materials, Private and Personal Archives, Association and Foundation Archives, and Art and Museum Collections.

Browse by collection: You can browse the materials by collections and the series contained within them. A collection may include several series and tens or even thousands of individual objects.

Search:

Keyword search: Enter the desired search term into the search field on the homepage of the search portal. You can truncate the search term with an *-symbol. Search terms can be combined using Boolean operators (AND; OR; NOT).

Descriptive information:

The descriptive information of the material includes, e.g. title of the work, creator names, date, general description of the content, keywords, and usage rights. Descriptive information is mainly available in Finnish, but the collections are also described in English.

Usage rights:

The usage rights of the material are indicated in the descriptive information of each individual object, see “Conditions governing use / Käyttöoikeudet”. The material has either a Creative Commons license or a RightsStatements InC-EDU license, which allows use only for educational purposes.

Downloading materials:

Individual objects can be downloaded from the search portal. The downloadable file is, in most cases, a lower-resolution version for use. If you need, for example, high-resolution image files, you can request them at arkisto@aalto.fi.

Citing materials:

When using Aalto Repository content, the copyright and usage rights of the materials must be respected. According to good practice, a reference to the material should include the following information: author(s), year, title of the work or material, type of material, Aalto University Archive, name of the collection, archive identifier, URL of the item, license.

Example reference in APA style for a scientific article: Miettinen, H. (1965). Eritasoristeys topografiaprojektiossa [drawing].
