Aalto Repository

Aalto Repository (Aalto Repo) is a system designed for the long-term preservation, management, and presentation of digital content. The system ensures the usability and accessibility of the University's permanently stored content. Its tools enable the secure storage and public presentation of various types of digital objects and their metadata. The implementation project of the Aalto Repository is a collaboration between Aalto University's Records Management and ITS Services.

Aalto Repository functions

The Aalto Repository is a system provided by Preservica Ltd, based on the OAIS reference model ISO 14721. Its key functions include:

  • Collection management: Preserving and describing digital objects using standardized metadata models, access licenses, and identifiers. Handling of personal data is described in the Privacy Notice for Archives and Records Management Services
  • Long-term preservation: Migrating and normalising digital object file formats and conducting regular integrity checks along with storing technical metadata. Also allows for exporting research and cultural heritage materials to the National Digital Preservation Service (CSC-PAS).
  • Presentation: A public interface at repo.aalto.fi for searching, viewing, and downloading materials. IIIF-assisted viewing for high-resolution visual materials. Harvesting material via the OAI-PMH protocol to the national Finna search service aaltoarkisto.finna.fi.
  • Cloud-based storage platform: Storage on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, optimized to reduce costs. Frequently used materials are stored in faster storage for easy access, while less frequently needed master content is archived cost-effectively.
