When you are ready to graduate, make a graduation request in Sisu. Your graduation request is based on your up-to-date primary study plan (HOPS).
Having a study plan in Sisu is compulsory for graduating, because Sisu generates the degree certificate based on both your primary study plan and the graduation request. This means that all studies that are on your primary study plan at the time you make the graduation request will be included in your degree.
All studies that you want to be included in your degree must be completed and registered in Sisu before making a graduation request. The only exception to this is master's thesis.
You can submit your thesis for evaluation at the same time as making the graduation request. The date of your thesis credits will be the date of graduation, when the thesis has been evaluated by the Degree Programme Committee.
Familiarize yourself well with the thesis process and requirements for thesis submission when planning your graduation!
Learn about the thesis process at SCI Master’s thesis workspace in MyCourses.
When you have completed your Master of Science (Technology) degree studies:
Check that you are enrolled as an attending student on your graduation day.
Make sure your Sisu study plan is up to date and approved. To avoid delays in graduation, ensure that all required modules have been approved at least three (3) weeks before the graduation request deadline.
If you are going to apply for your master’s thesis approval at the same time as you apply for graduation, see dates and more information on submitting your master’s thesis at SCI Master's Thesis - Deadlines.
Make a graduation request in Sisu. The request deadline will be your graduation date, which will be printed on your degree certificate (see the schedule below).
To appy for graduation in Sisu.

If you want the certificate in Swedish, please provide the information in the "Other info: Additional info for the graduation request" text field in the graduation request. Otherwise, the certificate will be in Finnish by default.
Your graduation day will be the next deadline date from the date you make a graduation request. See the dates below.

Once the dean has awarded the degree, you receive an invitation to the graduation ceremony by email. At the ceremony, the dean hands out the degree certificates to graduates.
Alternatively, you can collect your certificate from the Learning Services of School of Science. Please note that your final degree certificate will be ready according to the graduation schedule above. Check the contact information and opening hours. When collecting your certificate, you must prove your identity, so please have your ID with you.
If you are unable to attend the ceremony or collect your degree certificate, you can also authorize another person to collect it. For a valid reason you may also request Learning Services to mail the certificate for you as a registered letter. In both cases, please fill in the power of attorney and submit it as a hard copy to Learning Services or as a scanned copy to [email protected] In principle, certificates are mailed only outside the capital region (Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Kauniainen).
School of Science arranges four graduation ceremonies every year. See the dates in the schedule above. The ceremony includes speeches and music, and it lasts for about two hours. Refreshments are available after the ceremony. You can invite up to three guests. The invitation will be sent to graduates by email about one month before the ceremony. Email any questions to [email protected].
In addition to the School of Science graduation ceremony, an outdoor event “Graduation Party” will be organized on Wednesday 14 June 2023 at 17 for all bachelors, masters and licentiates who have graduated between 1 May 2022 and 30 April 2023 from Aalto University. Invitations to the event with registration link will be sent in April and May. So, remember to update your personal email address you’ll be using after the graduation in Sisu! Read more about the Party at https://www.aalto.fi/en/gradparty.
Students who, in their master’s degree studies, have shown excellent knowledge in the field as well as exceptional maturity and sense of judgment in their thesis, may have this recognised in their degree certificate with the phrase "Pass with Honours."
A degree may be awarded with honours if both conditions below are fulfilled:
- The weighted average grade of the courses included in the degree (including the thesis) is at least 4.0. Courses graded with pass/fail are not considered when the average grade is calculated.
- The grade for the master’s thesis is at least 4.
TEK Graduate Survey is a survey conducted by Aalto University School of Science and the Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland (TEK). It is an opportunity for new graduates to comment on the aspects of studying and employment. All responses are confidential, and it is not possible to connect any response with an individual respondent. In addition to providing information on the employment and salaries of recent graduates, your feedback is crucial for survey sponsors in assessing and improving higher education functions.

Study right at Aalto University, validity of your student card and reimbursement of the AYY membership fee
If you graduate in the beginning of a term (autumn or spring), and you can change your enrolment status from attendance to non-attendance in OILI before the enrolment period ends, you can apply for a membership fee refund from Student Union AYY.
If you graduate later during the autumn term and have paid for the entire academic year, you can apply for a refund of the spring term’s membership fee. Read more on AYY website: https://www.ayy.fi/en/membership-and-student-card/membership-fee.
Study right and student card
Your study right at Aalto University ends on your graduation date. Because the digital student cards deploy a real-time system in verifying your student status, you cannot use your digital student card after you have graduated.
If you have a plastic student card, it is valid until the end of your AYY membership period. However, if you have a plastic student card and you apply for reimbursement of the membership fee, you must visit Starting Point with your student card. Starting Point will record the change of your status and remove the academic year tag on your student card.
