The Department of Chemistry and Materials Science focuses on micro-, nano- and atomic scale engineering of compounds and materials. Our work in these areas encompasses synthesis, characterization and computational research.

Research

The research in the department focuses on advanced and functional materials, chemical synthesis, energy storage and conversion, as well as, molecular and materials modelling. Our teaching provides students a solid background for these topics.

Professor Simo-Pekka Hannula's Research Group for Advanced and Functional Materials conducts high-quality basic and applied materials research related to both current materials production and new advanced materials.

Analytical Chemistry group lead by Prof. Sakari Kulmala, concentrates on luminescence techniques.

RAMI – Raw materials research infrastructure

RAMI Raw Materials is a national, joint research infrastructure. Its target is to strengthen the long-term core expertise in Otaniemi (together with GTK and VTT), and to place Finland among the strong actors in natural and new inorganic material research needed in the circular economy.
