Electrochemical Materials and Applications

Our research mission is to advance clean electrochemical energy and power-to-X technologies, key enablers of a carbon-neutral and sustainable society. We combine fundamental and applied electrochemical materials science, driving innovation in both understanding and practical applications.

Research areas / Key applications

  1. Electrocatalytic valorization of biomass-derived chemicals and other renewable resources
  2. Alternative green hydrogen production by co-electrolysis
  3. Electrochemical interfaces and processes for a low-carbon future
  4. Systems electrochemistry (from nano to macro relationships)

Research approach

We work on the design of novel electrochemical nanomaterials using hydrothermal synthesis and electrodeposition, with an emphasis on precise control over composition and structure.

We also employ a range of electrochemical techniques to study these materials and gain insights into electrochemical processes at multiple scales — from conventional methods to advanced nanoscale approaches and operando spectro-electrochemistry.

By using and developing cutting-edge electrochemical microscopy, we uncover structure-function relationships and accelerate materials discovery through high-throughput combinatorial experimentation.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide fundamental insights that enable the rational design of materials and interfaces for critical applications in sustainable (electro)chemistry.
