AI in teaching and learning

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how we produce, structure, and present information. In university teaching, this opens up new opportunities—for example, in designing learning tasks, supporting students, and giving feedback. At the same time, the role of the teacher is evolving: AI does not replace pedagogical expertise, but it can complement and strengthen it in many ways.

This page brings together Aalto University’s guidelines and tips for the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning. Here you will find both official policies and practical materials to support your course planning.

Teacher responsibility and ethical practices

At Aalto University, AI can be used to support teaching and learning—unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. It is important to ensure that the use of AI does not compromise learning goals or create inequality among students.

Teachers are responsible for defining any limitations on AI use and communicating them clearly. Students also need to understand how AI can and cannot be used in different assignments, and how to properly acknowledge its use. Responsible use includes respecting data privacy and citing AI-generated content appropriately.
