Degree stucture

• First year studies in Aalto: 60 cr courses according to the confirmed study plan. Second year studies in UPC Barcelona: 30 cr courses + thesis (30 cr)
• UPC Barcelona curriculum for Communications Engineering students
   

Tuition Fee

Students subject to the tuition fee will pay Aalto University tuition fee also for their second study year in the double degree partner university. Aalto University scholarship is valid also during the second study year at the partner university.

Who can apply

You can apply for the UPC Barcelona double degree programme if

• you are Communications Engineering student
• you are first year student (this concern students admitted in Master’s admission)
• you will complete 60 ECTS according to your confirmed study plan by 30 June of the application year, including the compulsory foreign language studies in English, if applicable.
• GPA of your above mentioned Master’s studies is at least 3.0.

When applying, you don’t have to have all the required courses registered yet but your autumn (and III study period) study success gives you a good idea about whether you are able to meet the requirements.

How to apply

Step 1: Aalto nomination (Aalto nominates candidates for applying to Aalto - UPC Barcelona)

When: from 18 January to 29 January 2027 

How: Send the following documents to planning officer Outi Väisänen by email, masters-elec [at] aalto.fi
Please send the documents as one pdf file.

• An officially attested copy of the Bachelors degree or a certificate of equivalent studies and its authorized translation
• Official transcript of records of the Bachelor degree and its authorized translation
• Official transcript of records of your studies in Aalto University
• Double degree study plan (pdf) NOTE! Professor in charge of your major must confirm your study plan.
• Motivation letter
• Curriculum Vitae
• Copy of passport or ID card

Based on these documents, Aalto University evaluates whether the applicant is able to meet the double degree eligibility criteria after the first year studies. Students meeting the criteria will be nominated to UPC Barcelona. UPC Barcelona will make the selection decision, and inform the students about the decisions by 30 July.

You can apply for the Grenoble INP double degree programme if

• you are Communications Engineering, Computer Science or Macadamia student
• you are first year student (this concern students admitted in Master’s admission)
• you will complete 60 ECTS according to your confirmed study plan by 30 June of the application year, including the compulsory foreign language studies in English, if applicable. It is recommended, that the following studies are completed during the first study year:
  • Communications Engineering: major compulsory courses
  • Computer Science: major compulsory courses
  • Macadamia: major compulsory courses
• GPA of your above mentioned Master’s studies is at least 3.0.

Degree structure

First year studies at Aalto: 60 cr courses according to the confirmed study plan. Second year studies at TU Graz: 30 cr courses + Master's thesis (30 cr). The Master's thesis is written in English and co-supervised by a professor from each university. 

Upon successful completion, students will be awarded two degree certificates: Master of Science (Technology) from Aalto University and Diplom-Ingenieurin / Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.Ing.) from Graz University of Technology.

Degree Structure for students going from Aalto to Graz

Tuition Fee and Costs

Both universities follow their national policies and university regulations regarding tuition fees. Students must register and pay tuition and applicable fees at the university where they are studying for the period of their studies there, and under no circumstances will students be charged double tuition fees. 

At TU Graz, students pay the mandatory Austrian Student Union fee (ÖH-Beitrag) each semester, which also covers personal accident and liability insurance. Students are responsible for their own travel and living costs, but are eligible to apply for an Erasmus+ mobility grant for their study year abroad. 

Who can apply

You can apply for the TU Graz double degree programme if:

• you are a student in the CCIS programme’s Speech and Language Technology major 
• you are a first-year Master's student 
• you will complete 60 ECTS according to your confirmed study plan by 30 June 2027, including the compulsory 3 ECTS foreign language studies required by Aalto. It is required that the major's compulsory courses (Speech Processing, Speech Recognition, Supervised Machine Learning, Speech Synthesis, Statistical NLP, Speech and Language Processing Seminar, Academic Skills) are completed during the first study year. 
• you have demonstrated good academic performance (good grades / GPA of at least 3.0) and suitability and motivation for double degree studies. 
• you demonstrate a sound command of English (minimum B2 level on the CEFR scale). 

Note: The annual student intake quota for the programme is a maximum of 5 students.

  7. Copy of valid passport or ID card

Based on these documents, Aalto University evaluates whether the applicant meets the double degree eligibility criteria after the first-year studies. Students meeting the criteria will be nominated to TU Graz by the European nomination deadline (30 April). 
 

Step 2: TU Graz application and final admission

• Nominated students must complete their online application in the TU Graz application portal by 1 June. 
• TU Graz makes the academic evaluation and formal admission decisions. They inform the students about the decisions with an official acceptance letter. Studies at TU Graz begin in the autumn (winter semester) of 2027.
