Aalto students going on exchange can get extra support for ‘green travel’ by traveling to the exchange destination in a more environmentally friendly way: by train, shared ride, bike or bus.
The student can be entitled to the green travel support if majority of the trip, or at least the other way of a two-way trip is made with lower emission means of transport. The grant amount for this extra support is EUR 150 for Erasmus+ exchanges during the spring term 2022, autumn term 2022 and spring term 2023 and it will be paid after the exchange, once the student has submitted the after exchange form with a declaration for green travel (and a receipt or similar evidence if needed) confirming the travel arrangements.
For the exchanges during the academic year 2023-24 the sum of the grant for green travel will change and will be EUR 50 + daily allowance for travel days (max 4 days).
If a part of a two-way trip is (either to or from the destination) travelled by ferry or plane, but the majority (in kilometers) of both ways is travelled by train, car-pool, bus or bike, the student is entitled to the grant for green travel.
If the student travels one-way trip to the destination OR one-way trip back home entirely by train, car-pool, bus, and/or bike, s/he is entitled to the grant for green travel.
The starting point for Aalto students is Espoo, Finland, and the destination the exchange university's city.
NB. Aalto University is following the criteria the European Commission has set for means of transport that are more environmentally friendly i.e., 'green' and entitle for the extra support for green travel.
Ideas for greener travelling:
Erasmus+ programme offers a possibility to take part in short-term, blended mobility periods. This is a great option especially for those students who cannot attend traditional, long-term mobility (min. 3 months). A blended mobility period combines physical and virtual learning components.
Students can apply for short-term courses that their own School's partner universities offer.
Physical duration of a short-term Erasmus+ mobility is 5-30 days, and a virtual learning period must be included in the mobility (before, during or after the physical mobility). The virtual mobility period should allow teamwork and online cooperation.
The scholarship is paid only for the physical mobility. The virtual learning period is not mandatory for doctoral students.
One travel day can be added both before and after the physical part of the short-term mobility.
If the student gets the extra grant for green travel (for more info, see above) for the short-term mobility, up to four (4) days can be added in the mobility period, i.e., altogether six (6) extra days. A daily grant will be paid for these extra travel days.
A short-term, blended mobility can be e.g., an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) course.
Extent of the course must be min. 3 ECTS and the credits must be transferred to the student's Aalto degree after the mobility.

* Student who is eligible for the fewer opportunities additional grant will also get a separate travel grant. More info on the fewer opportunities grant.
One travel day can be added to the mobility before and after the physical mobility period. Daily grant will be paid for these days as well.
If the student is eligible for the extra support for green travel (see more info on this page; Support for green travel in the Erasmus+ programme) for the short-term mobility can up to four (4) travel days be added in the duration, i.e., there can be up to six (6) additional days. A daily grant will be paid for the travel days.
Erasmus+ short-term mobility grant application has a rolling deadline, with a few exceptions when the applications are not processed: July, December, January.
You can ask for the application form link from your own Aalto School's exchange coordinator. The application must be submitted one month before the planned mobility period at the latest.
The application form is electronic and as an attachment you will need

Please fill in the following sections of the Learning Agreement:

If there are more eligible candidates for a specific course than available spots for Aalto students, the decisive factor will be the student's GPA.
Students must follow the application instructions and timetables set by the organising university.
