Student Guide
Previous psychological research points out that University students are in the age of identity construction, as well as modifying life-long strategies for goal setting. To empower the construction of identity and personal goal setting as well as to pursue transformative learning skills in working life, the students need support from the educational institutions.
Personal Impact brings together credited courses taught at Aalto, for example on self-management, values, meaningfulness and well-being. The courses provide an opportunity to reflect on one’s own values, beliefs, and goals, either in internal dialogue or in conversations with others.
Depending on the programme, students may complete the courses offered in the Personal Impact either as part of their compulsory or elective studies. Courses make it possible to meet other students from all different fields of the university. Some courses are also available to teachers as part of the university pedagogical training. These courses can be found in a separate news item below.
Please note that courses taught in English have been named in English. Course offering may evolve during the adacemic year and be subject to change.
This site is currently updated for the academic year 2023-24.

The course provides an overview of gender and diversity in organizations and labour market in general. The course adopts a doing gender (and diversity) approach in understanding how inclusion and exclusion in organizations take place. We reflect how our thinking as well organizational practices carry cultural assumptions concerning gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality, and how these assumptions shift in time and space.
Aalto university has since 2021 alusta been member in national Gender studies network, Hilma. Hilma arranges internet courses in Gender and Women’s Studies and provides information on events related to Gender and Women’s Studies. It also organizes pedagogical courses for teachers.
Issues related to gender, race, intersectionality and equality are at the heart of the course offerings and play a major role in creating an inclusive work culture at university and elsewhere.
What Thinking Tools Is About?
Thinking is at the root of all human action. Yet we spend surprisingly little time thinking about our thinking or working out ways to improve our thinking. In addition to the long tradition in philosophy, that has always been at the forefront of improving thinking, also a more pragmatic approach to develop thinking has taken root in the recent decades.
Understanding the human mind, its processes and functions, has developed in leaps through the last five or so decades. We now understand that humans have not only one mind, but two, and that while we have some influence on our conscious thought, there is a whole wonderland of non-conscious thought that we can only influence if we learn the proper tools to do so. Understanding how your non-conscious mind works helps you alleviate work-related stress, generate creative ideas, eliminate writer's block and communicate more clearly. Your non-conscious mind can also inform you of how to find a clear direction to head towards in your life – which can sometimes be a surprising one, once you're freed of the constraints of your presuppositions.
Kurssi sopii kaikille aiheesta kiinnostuneille.

The Student Services psychologist group comprises Aalto’s study psychologists and the career counselling psychologist.
An individual who is able to regulate stress, recognize their own values and ways of thinking, and take these into action, can support educational wellbeing, ie. their own and that of the students. Personal Impact for University educators aims to support this.
