Course information

Learning outcomes

The course aims to give students a basic proficiency in industrial engineering and management thinking, argumentation and analysis. Upon completing the course, the student masters the basic concepts and key dynamics of production as an economic activity, and is able to understand and evaluate business opportunities, design and evaluate business processes, and analyze the financial state of a business. The student also understands the basics of sustainable and responsible value creation. Further, throughout the course, the student learns basic skills of engineering work, such as management and project planning.

Industrial engineering and management as a science; Value as the foundation of business; Production systems, processes and control; Organizations; Product and service centric design; Product life cycle; Production as part of the value chain; Sustainable and responsible value creation; Projects and investments; Accounting and profitability.

Lecture materials, pre-lecture materials, exercise materials, compendium, TUTAwiki, recommended literature.

Workload

Lectures and preparation for them, Exercise lectures and groupwork, Calculation exercises, Independent studies. Lecture and contact teaching session attendance is recommended, but not mandatory.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites. A basic proficiency in Word and Excel (or similar applications) is advantageous.

Evaluation

Lectures, lecture pre-assignments, exercise lectures, course project, calculation assignments and exam, of which the three latter are compulsory.

Exam instructions at the Open University

The teacher has four (4) weeks to grade the exam submissions starting from the exam date.
