Copyright and licensing

Learn about the copyright and licensing of research publications.

Publishing agreements

In agreements related to publishing, the parties agree on, among other things:

  • the principles of authorship
  • copyright, such as how the author or publisher may use the publication, and
  • the openness of the publications (including research funders' requirements and self-archiving)

Creative Commons licenses

Creative Commons licenses make it possible for authors and rights holders to define in advance the terms under which their materials may be used (for example, shared, adapted, or built upon) without needing to request separate permission. This makes the use of research outputs clearer and smoother for all parties.

Copyright guide

Copyright guide consists of three sections:

  • Copyright basics: When does copyright arise, who does copyright belong to, and which rights does copyright include.
  • Research and copyright: How do copyright-based and ethical authorship differ from each other, and which copyright act exceptions secure freedom of scientific research.
  • Employment and copyright: When does copyright belong to the employee and when is it transferred to the employer (Aalto University).
