Elias Oikarinen appointed as Associate Professor of Real Estate Economics

D.Sc. Elias Oikarinen (b. 1973) has been appointed to Aalto University’s Department of Built Environment as an Associate Professor for the time 1.8.2019–31.7.2024. The field of his research is real estate economics.

Professor Oikarinen, whose background is in economics, has a wide-range expertise in the operation of the real estate market. His research focuses on housing market dynamics and real estate investment. Oikarinen is a member of editorial boards of two international academic journals focused on real estate economics.

Oikarinen is working as a work package leader and as the deputy principal investigator of the consortium Smartland, which is funded by the Strategic Research Council of the Academy of Finland. In the project researchers and professionals of the field are joining forces to identify land use policy tools that can steer the society towards welfare increasing outcomes. The project covers 20 biggest cities and urban areas in Finland, and the consortium also includes University of Helsinki, University of Turku and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Oikarinen, who is originally from the city of Oulu, has previously worked as an Associate Professor of insurance science at Tampere University and in various positions at University of Turku over the years. He has also worked as a visiting scholar in such international universities as University of Melbourne, University of Cambridge and University of Geneva. Outside the academia, he has been a member of the board for different organizations and has consulted several public and private sector organizations and companies.

Oikarinen has years of teaching experience from universities and training experience from private and public sector. In Aalto he has worked earlier as an Academy Research Fellow during 2017-18. In his previous job at the University of Turku, he acted e.g. as a member of the board for The Doctoral Programme of Turku School of Economics.

Professor Oikarinen has received his university degrees from the Turku School of Economics. He graduated as a Master of Science in economics in 2000 and as a Doctor of Science (economics) in 2007.
