Arttu Jääskeläinen switched fields to expand his energy market expertise

Arttu Jääskeläinen is a second-year student in Energy Systems and Markets, one of the four majors within the Advanced Energy Solutions master's programme. The programme is organised in collaboration between the Schools of Electrical Engineering, Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

Why did you choose the Energy Systems and Markets major?

My background is in energy and environmental engineering studies at a university of applied sciences. I graduated as an engineer in December 2024 and, in the same breath, decided to apply for a master's degree at a university. I had motivation, and didn't want to postpone my studies. Studying, of course, is a significant part of my career development and I believe I will study in some form throughout my life.

I decided to apply for this major because it seemed interesting and like it would focus on areas I assume will have a foothold in the job market, especially in the future. My work is in energy efficiency of real estate, but I wanted to expand my knowledge and focus on studying strategic concepts, which are covered in the Energy Systems and Markets major. Aalto also seemed like a natural choice, as I have already lived in Espoo for a few years – just a short tram ride away.

What has been the most interesting part of your studies?

My favourite course so far has dealt with wind power, which is a significant part of Finland's energy self-sufficiency. I am generally interested in how renewable energy can reduce the amount of imported electricity we use.

The studies are interesting as a whole. The best thing is being able to challenge myself. Even though my studies at the university of applied sciences dealt with similar topics and provided a good foundation for further studies, I still feel like I have switched fields in a sense.

What is studying at Aalto like in practice?

Studying at Aalto feels both intense and independent. Few courses require in-person attendance, but on average the courses are more demanding compared to my previous education. The amount of work required to complete the course is large, so you have to set aside enough time for schoolwork – as well as recovery. Going too fast and burning out benefits no one!

A lot of my old school buddies ended up doing their master's studies in a hybrid format, but for me it was important to be able to study in-person. Thankfully my life situation allowed this option.

This is a significant period in one's life, and it's important to do things in the way that feel best. Studying is always done for yourself, so you also need to listen to yourself: what you want to study and how you want to do it.

What is student life at Aalto like?

Due to my work life and entrepreneurship my busiest student years are over, and these days I prefer a calm everyday pace. However, I am a member of the Guild of Electrical Engineering, and still attend Aalto parties and events sometimes! I am also going on a student exchange to Italy in the spring of 2027.

Otaniemi is a lush and interesting mix of modern and timeless architecture. At Aalto you definitely get your steps in – the campus is huge and the buildings are located far apart!

Many different cultures are represented on campus thanks to the lively exchange programmes. There are also numerous affordable student lunch options.

What skills have gained for work life?

It's my belief that education alone doesn't open doors in a career – a fresh master's graduate might not know how to do anything. However, education arms us with tools for success: guidelines on how to approach problems and solve them. Studying is also a sensitive period that builds up perseverance and stress tolerance.

Ultimately things like gaining job opportunities depend a lot on the person themselves, as well as their output.
