Trucks and wheel-loaders contribute significantly to global carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. Studies so far have focused separately on intelligent energy management and the techno-economic analysis of these vehicles. However, the impact of efficient energy management on the return on investment of hybridizing these vehicles remains underexplored.
This study, therefore, explored the financial feasibility of investing in hybridizing trucks and wheel-loaders fitted with efficient energy management strategies. Physics-based models were developed to analyze the impact of efficient energy management on payback time. Rule-based and optimization-based strategies were compared. Fuel savings and return-on-investment time were the key performance metrics.
Mild-hybrid trucks demonstrated higher fuel savings on routes with minimal slope, but parallel-hybrid trucks achieved improved fuel savings on routes with steeper slopes. Higher fuel savings led to increased monetary savings per trip, resulting in quicker return on investment. This indicated that truck hybridization is financially attainable with route-specific powertrains and rightsized components. Conversely, for a series-hybrid wheel-loader, experimental results revealed that high battery costs led to dwindling monetary savings after each load-cycle execution. This implied that wheel-loader hybridization is financially non-viable with current technology.
