This project explores the intersection of bio-based materials and craft, focusing on how roots interact with textured surfaces to form a living textile. Using barley and wheat seeds as biological agents, we investigate the subversion of the traditional dynamic of humans imitating nature. In a reversal of roles, nature becomes the imitator by having to replicate textiles crafted by humans.

These tiles are a simple design object meant to be easily recreated by anyone with interest in exploring the potential of root textiles without needing complex skills or tools. The grooves on the tiles are created by pressing real textiles (crochet doilies and laces) on clay. Through this process, an imprint of the original textile is left on the surface, becoming the guiding map that the roots can then read and follow as they grow. The project also aims at repurposing used and discarded objects, forgotten in some corners. For this reason, the materials used were salvaged from a recycling context. By using second-hand textiles and recycled clay, we were trying to give new life not only to the material itself, but also to the traces of past human making.
