Building 2030

The construction sector looks forward to 2030

Building 2030 is a consortium that develops a vision for the Finnish construction sector in the year 2030 and to work toward implementing it. This is undertaken to prepare for future changes in the field of construction – digitalisation, rapid urbanisation, climate change and more – and to ensure a sustainable foundation for business in the sector going forward.

The work going into Building 2030 is built on international benchmarks, adopting best practices from other fields and the transformation of operations brought on by digitalisation and new technologies.

The consortium consists of Aalto University and 21 companies from the construction sector: A-Insinöörit, Consolis Parma, Fira, Granlund, Haahtela, Hilti, Jatke, Lujatalo, MagiCAD Group, Peab, Pohjola Rakennus, Ramboll, Ramirent, Rejlers, Skanska, SRV, Stark, Tocoman, Trimble, Vastuu Group, and YIT.

The Building 2030 project is open by nature and welcomes all organisations interested in the development of the construction sector.

Five central themes

The consortium focuses on three important global trends: the digital revolution, rapid urbanisation and climate change. The construction sector can prepare for these trends by increasing ecological and industrial construction and by better utilising the planning and production data of construction projects. Other important trends identified include globalisation and the aging population.

The core of the Building 2030 vision is built around five themes:

Reliable

In 2030, construction companies are seen as highly reliable partners. The construction process is transparent and understandable to all parties and end products are of high quality and finished on time and on budget. Construction is predictable – surprising or unforeseen cost overruns and delays are avoided.

User-centric

In 2030, the user of a space receives real-time information about the environmental factors affecting the building, while the building is also capable of estimating its performance and anticipating maintenance needs. Real estate adapts to the activities of its user. Buildings and the entire built environment are user-centric and planned for long-term security. Buildings can be flexibly modified and they support the user's business operations.

Sustainable development

In 2030, all decisions are guided by sustainable development. Recyclable and safe materials are used in construction. The amount of construction waste is diminished and carbon dioxide emissions have been cut in half from 2018 levels.

Productivity

By 2030, the construction sector generates value for the customer. The productivity problem of construction has been solved in planning, at building sites and in the entire delivery chain. Best practices are disseminated effectively. By being among the first to achieve broad-based solutions to the productivity problem, Finnish companies enjoy significant export and internationalisation opportunities.

Inspiring

In 2030, the field of construction is attractive to young and international experts as well as start-up companies. People from a variety of disciplines meet and work together effectively in the construction sector. Employers are seen as inspiring and they use innovative models of management and production. Employers in the field spur each other to undertake responsible, research-based experiments, the results of which are efficiently channelled into future projects.
