My field of expertise is operations management in construction. My research interests include lean construction, real-time production control, location based management systems, prefabrication / modular construction, construction logistics and digitalized construction operations. My main goal is solve the productivity problem of construction projects by leaning the process, achieving situational awareness through digitalization (IoT, robotic vision, AI) and moving most of the work outside of the construction site to industrialize construction.

I coordinate the Vision 2030 consortium which includes 13 Finnish construction and design companies who try to develop a vision for how buildings should be constructed in 2030. Vision 2030 consortium funds 2-3 research projects annually and I am currently the principal investigator of two of these projects.  I am the principal investigator in three projects funded by Business Finland:

  1. iCONS –Intelligent Construction Site – using indoor positioning to monitor resource flows in real time
  2. RECAP – Reality Capture – using deep learning techniques to automatically analyze pictures and laser scanned pointclouds to measure progress and quality
  3. DiCtion – Digitalizing Construction Workflows – trying to combine the data sources of construction into a relevant, real-time situation picture for all main stakeholders of a construction project
