Accessibility statement - MyStudies

The university aims to guarantee the accessibility of the MyStudies system in accordance with the Act on the Provision of Digital Services 306/2019 (the act is available only in Finnish). This accessibility statement concerns the MyStudies system. Based on an external audit of the student interface, the accessibility statement describes the system’s level of conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), listing the content and features that do not conform to the guidelines.

Conformance status

An external independent accessibility audit has rated the system’s accessibility as B on a scale of A to C. The accessibility problems are explained in more detail below.

The service has features that make it problematic for screen readers, such as wrong focus order and elements that open automatically. As a result, a person using a screen reader does not always get enough information about the page contents and has difficulty in finding information on the page.

For someone with low vision, problems with responsiveness as well as limited scaling possibilities cause issues. In other respects, the service is moderately manageable for someone with low vision. There are also issues with usability and cognitive accessibility such as mixed languages and buttons that do not work.

The accessibility of the service is being improved continuously, but it will take time to identify and fix all the issues in such a vast system. As the system is developed, we will make improvements to the non-accessible content listed below, even if we could not fix whole sections at once.

Alternative ways to use the same service

MyStudies allows students to book a study guidance appointment in the system. Students can book the same kind of appointment by contacting the university Learning Services or a designated staff member by email or telephone. The information content available in the system is, where applicable, available also through other systems, primarily SISU, MyCourses and the aalto.fi website.

Non-accessible content

The service is not yet fully compliant with the Act on the Provision of Digital Services 306/2019.

The following content and/or functions do not comply with the requirements of the said act yet:

  1. Wrong focus order (WCAG 1.3.1)
    • When moving from one page to another, for instance, when browsing through links in the main menu using the keyboard, and a new page opens, the focus on the new page remains where the user interface element was on the first page. By default, the focus should move to the first element of the opening page or exceptionally, to the interactive content of the page.
  2. Elements open automatically when the mouse pointer moves over them (WCAG 2.5.1).
    • Some of the instructions open automatically when the mouse pointer moves over them although no button is pressed.
  3. Scaling and zooming disabled (WCAG 1.4.10)
    • The page scaling or zooming is limited to 500% in the HTML code.
  4. Vague section headings (WCAG 1.3.1)
    • The section headings used on the site do not comply to the WCAG accessibility guidelines’ requirements for hierarchy and logic.
  5. Moving to a new page without advance warning (WCAG 3.2.2)
    • The user is moved to an external service or file without warning.
  6. Broken buttons and other elements (WCAG 4.1.2)
    • The service has elements that lack functionality.
  7. No name for page language selector (WCAG 4.1.2, 3.1.2, 2.1.1)
    • The language selector has no name. The language selector carries the name of the language currently in use, for example, English.
The language selector links have no alt attributes.
  8. Problems with responsiveness (WCAG 1.4.10)
    • When using the zooming function in the browser, some of the user interface elements overlap with each other.
  9. Insufficient focus visible (WCAG 2.4.7)
    • The elements which receive focus are not distinguished sufficiently clearly from the other elements on the page.
  10. Image links without link texts (WCAG 1.3.1).
    • The service has images which serve as links, but the text link in the HTML code is empty.
  11. Images without text alternatives (WCAG 1.1.1)
    • The service has images which serve as links, but which have an empty text link in the HTML code.
  12. Missing language specification (WCAG 3.1.1)
    • When the user logs in the first time, there is no language specification on the quick guide page.
  13. Tab order (WCAG 2.4.3)
    • When browsing the page using the tab key, the main menu comes first before the language selector, profile menu and Tools menu, all of which are higher on the page than the main menu.
  14. Buttons with insufficient names or no names (WAG 4.1.2)
    • The service has buttons without names or buttons with functions that have not been described sufficiently clearly for screen reader users.
  15. Links with unclear link titles (WCAG 2.4.4)
    • The service has links with unclear titles.
  16. Decorative images (WCAG 1.1.1)
    • The service has purely decorative images that have not been hidden from screen reader software.
