Having social networks helps you feel at home! Aalto University organises many events and other possibilities for international staff and their families to meet and mingle and thus hopefully settle in smoothly. Experiencing Finland events and Aalto Club trips have become popular due to their casual and relaxed form. In addition, we have collected additional external tips and links for you to find the most suitable way to socialise and to find nice things to do.

Feeling at home at Aalto University
Do you want to feel at home and
- participate to nice and relaxed trips and events?
- have new acquaintances, friends and networks?
- … just meet and mingle?
In addition to some casual events organized at the departments and schools we organise several events which gathers staff members all over the Aalto University and sometimes also from other organizations as well. These informal and relaxed events includes e.g. Aalto Club activities and Experiencing Finland events. The registration to the events is done mainly on the Events pages at aalto.fi, as the event is published there. More information on the events, see below.
Experiencing Finland is warm, casual and relaxed welcoming event for newly arrived international staff and their family members of the Aalto University and the University of Helsinki.
Experiencing Finland is held twice a year, during autumn (hosted by the Aalto University) and during early spring (hosted by the University of Helsinki).
The Experiencing Finland events usually consist of a presentation of Finnish culture, as well as seasonal events and specialties. After the general presentation there is a fun, but informative, session with peer stories and experiences and time for networking and tasting special tastes of Finland.
Experiencing Finland event provides a great opportunity for cross organizational networking. Family members are most welcome to join but please note no separate children´s activities are arranged.
Experiencing Finland event is announced at the newsfeed and also with direct emails to international newcomers few weeks before the event.
Kindly note that the attendance to the Experiencing Finland event is not considered as official working time.

HEI LIFE, a national project focusing on higher education institutions’ support for international academics, staff and their families, is happy to announce the start of the HEI LIFE Spouse Network for Greater Helsinki.
The network hopes to bring together spouses of employees in higher education institutions in the greater Helsinki area for collaboration, peer support and networking. Everyone belonging to the focus group is most warmly welcome to join the network!

In the autumn of 2020, a blood group of Aalto University staff was established, the purpose of which is to act together for a vital issue. Aalto people can donate individually or together in teams and thus collect our joint blood donation balance.
Active blood groups are awarded an annual certificate of honor by the Blood Service.

Aalto employees can establish a club around a theme they are keen on and there are several persons interested in the club. The club is entitled to a small financial support and entitled to operate on the Aalto premises. The intention is that the clubs would cover the whole university, i.e. every employee is welcome to join the club's activities.
