Open access agreements with publishers

Take advantage of the open access agreements we have with publishers! Under the agreements, Aalto affiliated corresponding authors can publish their articles without open access fees (APC fee) or get discounts on them.

Agreements are Plans S compliant transformative agreements which provide researchers possibility to access scientific journals and publish articles open access without APC fees (so called Read & Publish).

You can take advantage of the agreements when the following criteria are met:

  1. You are affiliated with Aalto University, ie. you are a researcher, doctoral student or other staff member of Aalto University.
    1. Your affiliation with Aalto university is clearly stated in the article.
    2. Most publishers require that your affiliation with Aalto University is valid at the time of the acceptance of the article.
  2. You are the corresponding author of the article, i.e. you submit the manuscript and communicate with the publisher through the peer review process.
  3. You use your Aalto email when submitting the manuscript and choose Aalto University as your organization, because the identification is based on these.

Please note:

  • The agreements cover open access fees (APC), but not additional costs like color photographs or extra pages.
  • Most publishers have a shared pool of free open access articles for the FinElib Consortium and an annual or agreement period quota. Please keep in mind the quota may run out.
  • All the journals of a publisher are not covered by the agreements. Please check the detailed journal lists and instructions in the table below. Agreements cover mainly hybrid journals, with some exceptions. For full open access journals, only discount on APC fee is usually provided by the agreements; the whole fee is not covered.
  • If the journal is not included in the agreement or you are not able to otherwise take advantage of the agreement, please check the possibility for green open access (self-archiving).
  • Apart from open access agreements, Aalto University does not have a central open access fund. If you publish in a journal which is not covered by our agreements, APC fee should be covered either through project funding or basic funding of the department. Please make sure to contact the controller of your own department for assistance in such cases.

Publishing agreements

In publishing agreements, authors agree on copyright issues, such as the principles of authorship and terms for open access publishing and self-archiving (green open access). Researchers should make sure that terms either offer immediate gold open access or allow for green open access agreed upon with the funding bodies.

Funders' open science requirements

Research funders want to promote open science and research, which is why they set requirements for the openness of research publications and data they are funding. European Commission (EC) and Research Council of Finland (former Academy of Finland) are participating in the open access initiative Plan S, which affects the open access and open data requirements in calls starting in 2021.

Plan S

Plan S is an open access initiative launched by the EU Commission and Science Europe. At its core is the objective that, in calls starting from 1 January 2021, all scholarly articles resulting from public research funding must be published in open access journals or on open access platforms.

Open Access Publishing

Open access to publications ensures that scientific publications are accessible to everyone free of charge.
