Open access agreements

Key criteria for using open access agreements

1. You are the corresponding author. You submit the manuscript and handle communication with the publisher.
2. You are affiliated with Aalto University. You are a researcher, doctoral student, or other staff member, and your Aalto affiliation is clearly shown in the article.
3. You use your Aalto email when submitting the manuscript and select Aalto University as your organization. These are used to verify your eligibility to use the agreement.

Discounts for open access fees 

Open access agreements provide two types of discounts for open access fees (APC fees):

1. Open access fee is fully covered. The fee will be waived upon acceptance of the article, subject to the availability of the article quota. No separate invoice is sent. 
2. 15 % discount on open access fee is provided. Publisher sends an invoice where the discount is applied. Please confirm funding with your department in advance. Aalto University does not have a central open access fund.

Important information

1. Agreements cover open access fees (APC fees) only. They do not cover extra color or page charges. For these charges, please confirm funding with your department in advance.
2. Most publishers have a shared article quota for the FinELib Consortium. Quotas may run out during the year.
   • Wiley article quota has run out at the end of October. Taylor & Francis and Emerald article quotas will run out in November.

3. All the journals and article types of a publisher may not be covered by the agreements. Please check the detailed guidelines and journal lists.
4. Aalto University does not have a central open access fund. If a journal is not covered by our agreements, and publishing requires a mandatory APC fee, please confirm funding with your department in advance. 
   • If publishing doesn't require a mandatory APC fee, you can consider green open access (self-archiving of the peer-reviewed manuscript) as an alternative route to open access.  
5. Agreements are always fixed-term. FinELib consortium negotiates renewals with the publishers.
