Master's Programme in Space Science and Technology
Programme main page
Curriculum 2024–2026
About the programme
The Programme consists of a Major either in Space Robotics and Automation or in Space Technology (25 ECTS), completed at Aalto University, Minor subject at another university in Space Science and Technology (30 ECTS and 30 ECTS), completed at LTU, and Elective studies (5-6 ECTS), and the Master’s thesis (30 ECTS) completed at Aalto University. After completing the 120 ECTS credits program, students will
- have good knowledge in Space Technology and Space Robotics, Space and Atmospheric Physics, Astrophysics and Planetology,
- have a strong background for research and development work in space and space related fields,
- have good skills in oral and written presentations of scientific and technical materials in English,
- have qualifications for collaboration and leadership with responsibility,
- have international experience as well as knowledge and understanding for other cultures after studying in a very multicultural environment at two of the SpaceMaster Consortium universities: Luleå University of Technology and Aalto University.
Major 25 ECTS
Code: ELEC3047
Credits: 25 ECTS
Responsible professor: Ville Kyrki
The Space Robotics and Automation track at Aalto University is designed to give a comprehensive understanding in robotics and related theories. The courses will provide the students the ability to apply this knowledge into the space context studied during the first year of the programme.
The curriculum is centered around a few compulsory courses that provide a basis for specialization in the more advanced topics taught in optional courses.

Code: ELEC3076
Credits: 25 ECTS
Responsible professor: Esa Kallio
The Space Technology track at Aalto University is designed to give an understanding in
space science and related technologies and instruments.
The curriculum is centered around selective courses that provide a basis for specialization in
the more advanced topics taught in optional courses.
Please note that the course Introduction to Space contains highly usefull material for the other
space courses and is highly recommended in case the contents are not familiar to the student.
Check the course information in MyCourses to decide whether you need to take the course or
not.

Thesis 30 ECTS
Students are required to complete a Master's Thesis, which is an individual research assignment with a workload corresponding to 30 credits. The thesis is written on a topic related to the student's advanced studies and is agreed upon between the student and a supervisor who specializes in the topic area of the thesis. Master’s Thesis work includes a seminar presentation or equivalent presentation. The Master’s Thesis is a public document and cannot be concealed.
