Master's Programme in Space Science and Technology
Programme main page
Curriculum 2020–2022
The Programme consists of a Major either in Space Robotics and Automation or in Small Satellites and Space Instrumentation (25 cr), completed at Aalto University, Minor subject at another university in Space Science and Technology (30 cr and 30 cr), completed at LTU, and Elective studies (5-6 cr), and the Master’s thesis (30 cr) completed at Aalto University. After completing the 120 ECTS credits program, students will
- have very good knowledge in Space Technology and Space Robotics, Space and Atmospheric Physics, Astrophysics and Planetology,
- have a strong background for research and development work in space and space related fields,
- have good skills in oral and written presentations of scientific and technical materials in English,
- have qualifications for collaboration and leadership with responsibility,
- have international experience as well as knowledge and understanding for other cultures after studying in a very multicultural environment at two of the SpaceMaster Consortium universities: Luleå University of Technology and Aalto University.
The programme consists of the following study modules:
- Major: Space Robotics and Automation 2020-2022
- Major: Small Satellites and Space Instrumentations 2020-2022
- Elective studies
- Master's thesis
- Minor subject
Major: Space Robotics and Automation
Code: ELEC3047
Credits: 25 ECTS cr
Responsible professor: Ville Kyrki
The Space Robotics and Automation track at Aalto University is designed to give a comprehensive understanding in robotics and related theories. The courses will provide the students the ability to apply this knowledge into the space context studied during the first year of the programme.
The curriculum is centered around a few compulsory courses that provide a basis for specialization in the more advanced topics taught in optional courses.
You can view your degree structure and information on courses and study modules in Sisu (sisu.aalto.fi) once you’ve made a HOPS study plan (Sisu Help).
Your study plan automatically shows the courses and study modules that are compulsory, i.e. those you are required to complete in order to graduate. For your elective (optional) studies module, you can find courses by using the search function either in Sisu’s ‘selection assistant’ or on the Search page (click Search on the upper banner).

Major: Small Satellites and Space Instrumentations
Code: ELEC3062
Credits: 25 ECTS cr
Responsible professor: Esa Kallio
The Small Satellites and Space Instrumentation track at Aalto University is designed to give an understanding in space science and related technologies and instruments.
The curriculum is centered around a few compulsory courses that provide a basis for specialization in the more advanced topics taught in optional courses.
Please note that the course Introduction to Space contains material necessary for the other space courses and is highly recommended in case the contents are not familiar to the student. Check the course information in MyCourses to decide whether you need to take the course or not.
