Studies at other Aalto schools or other Finnish universities

As an Aalto University degree student you can complete studies also outside your own field of study. Some of the studies require an application while other studies are open for all Aalto students. You can complete either individual courses or a minor outside your own field of study.

Elective studies

For your free elective studies module you can study courses offered by Aalto University or by other universities as it is possible by Aalto internal and inter institutional agreements and procedures and course specific prerequisites.

The structure of your Master’s Programme is designed so that you are able to study your major studies i.e. common and advanced courses during the first year. This leaves the second year for elective courses and Master’s thesis.
Alternatively, you can deepen your expertise by taking more of our advanced courses as elective studies or broaden your expertise by choosing courses from Aalto’s other programmes or from different universities.
The choice for elective studies is yours: the most important thing is that your elective studies complement your major studies and provide you with expertise that you personally feel important and inspiring for your career.

You can complete a minor subject and include it in elective studies. Please note that if you want to have a minor it needs to be advanced level minor. Please see the list of all minors offered by Aalto University under Minors

You can also include max 5 ECTS of practical training (ENG-E1010 Practical training) in your elective studies. You can find information on practical training on this page (MyCourses).

Elective studies must be university level studies that fulfill the degree requirements and, in general, studies that are offered as degree studies at the university in question. Universities also offer courses that are targeted for a larger audience. The suitability of these studies is evaluated taking into consideration the learning outcomes of the degree that the courses are planned to be included in.

Compulsory language studies are included in students’ elective studies and are agreed in the personal study plan.

Please note that the total number of credits for a master's degree (major studies, elective studies and master's thesis) may not exceed 125 ECTS.

The Dean's List of the School of Engineering

The School of Engineering launched its annual Dean’s List in 2014 to recognize those bachelor’s and master’s degree students who have completed at least 60 credits in the School of Engineering during an academic year with a weighted grade point average of at least 4.0.

The idea behind the list is to commend students who have excelled in their studies and to motivate students to work toward their study goals.

The Learning Services informs the Dean’s list students in the end of the calendar year and asks them for permission to publish their name on the Dean’s list board. The new Dean's List board will be published in the beginning of the next calendar year at Otakaari 4 building. In addition, a diploma signed by the Dean will be offered together with a Dean’s List overall patch.

Application deadlines for IDBM master's theses

The evaluation and approval of the master’s thesis are handled in the IDBM Programme Committee meetings (IDBM students who have started their studies in 2018 or later). The thesis supervisor, advisor(s) and thesis topic must be approved in MyStudies before submitting the thesis.

Please see school-specific instructions for the thesis process and graduation.

All instructions for the master's thesis from the School of Engineering are available in the MyCourses space ENG master's thesis guide (requires Aalto login)

All master's students at the School of Engineering are automatically enrolled in the MyCourses space every two months. If you are not enrolled, please request enrollment by contacting masterstudies-eng@aalto.fi.

The master’s thesis is a 30-credit entity that also includes the maturity test and presentation of the thesis. The master's thesis is a piece of applied research and is written on a topic related to the advanced studies of the degree programme. The key goal of the master’s thesis is solving a problem relevant to the field of study based on existing scientific knowledge in compliance with the principles of responsible conduct of research.

Writing a thesis teaches professional skills – and support is available

Thesis writing gives you not only knowledge about your field and its research, but also general skills for working life, such as project management, communication and scheduling skills. You will learn about long-term knowledge construction and working with complex problems.

A thesis is a sizable undertaking, and many students at some point find it difficult to do. This, too, is part of the learning process and it's completely normal. It is good to recall that at this point in your studies you have already managed to carry out a number of other large-scale study projects. It may be good to outline the diverse skills you have already acquired in the writing of your thesis.

While thesis writing requires independent thinking and work, it does not have to be done alone without support or guidance. Your thesis advisor and thesis supervisor, who have been designated by your programme, hold the primary responsibility for providing guidance, including guidance on the content of your thesis. You may also benefit from the many other easily obtainable means of support that Aalto offers.

We have compiled a databank of key skills that are related to working life and that are needed when writing your thesis. We also offer advice on how to get support at Aalto University for writing your thesis, so that you can get help when you need it.

Applying for graduation

Students can apply for graduation in Sisu when all courses required for the master's degree have been registered in Sisu, and the master’s thesis submitted to evaluation (or completed).

Graduation is sought through the study plan in Sisu and therefore it is crucial that the study plan is up to date, reviewed and approved by programme administrative staff.
The courses shown in the study plan will also be printed on the degree certificate.

Note that you can apply for the approval and evaluation of the thesis in MyStudies and apply for graduation in Sisu at the same time.

Note: The electronic degree certificate will replace the traditional paper degree certificate for those graduating on or after 1 August 2025

The electronic degree certificate is an official original document bearing the digital signature of the school dean.

The electronic degree certificate is more reliable than a paper certificate, since it is considerably more difficult to forge. It is also easily authenticated in e.g. the certification service of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. In addition, it can simplify a student’s job search, as it can be easily included as a digital attachment in an online application form.
