At the start of the 2025 academic year, Aalto University students were asked how they would like to use 14 000 euros from the university's budget to develop campus with the theme of wellbeing on the campus. The idea was based on the "one euro for every student" participatory budgeting project, organised annually at the university since 2021. The aim is to strengthen student wellbeing and develop the campus by involving students in decision-making.

"This year, we received several feasible and well-justified ideas. It has been great to see how students have taken ownership of the project! This year again, all ideas were carefully considered. Those ideas that did not fit into the scope of this project were forwarded to the relevant authorities," says Minna Mäkitalo, Specialist, Policy and Foresight.

The project organisers (representatives from Aalto University, ACRE and Aalto University Student Union) selected four proposals for voting. The shortlisted proposals fulfilled the main criteria of the brainstorming process, i.e. promotion of student wellbeing, inclusiveness, accessibility, sustainability, budget framework and implementation schedule.

For more information on the participatory budgeting project, please contact Manti Kangas, Sustainability Coordinator, manti.kangas@aalto.fi.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
