The integration of master's theses will begin in the Aalto University research information system

The metadata of Aalto master's theses has been integrated into the Aalto Current Research Information System (ACRIS). The integration covers data as of 1 January 2020, which means that more than 6 000 master’s theses have now been integrated into ACRIS.

The data integrated into ACRIS are imported from Aalto’s institutional repository, Aaltodoc, and the student information system Sisu. While the bibliographic information concerning master's theses is already publicly visible in both the Aaltodoc repository and the Primo library system, the research information system presents it from a different perspective: theses are displayed as supervised works in each supervisor's and advisor’s profile in the research portal, making their supervision or advisor work visible and complementing their academic footprint.

Additionally, theses are displayed as their own collection in the portal, where they can be filtered based on school or year of degree. This collection also includes theses which have not been associated with any supervisor or advisor.

The research portal (https://research.aalto.fi/) will contain the following bibliographic information:

  1. Author
  2. Thesis title
  3. Year
  4. Persistent identifier (link to Aaltodoc)
  5. Language of thesis
  6. Degree
  7. Keywords
  8. Abstract (with the author's permission for theses published before 1 January 2024.)
  9. Name of awarding school
  10. First name and last name of supervisor and/or advisor

New and/or changed information is transferred daily from Aaltodoc and SISU to ACRIS.

The data will be transferred to the system in two stages:

  1. Now the data has been integrated into the system's editing side, where it can be reviewed by supervisors and advisors. Supervisors and advisors can see not only the thesis bibliographic information but also information about the students who have completed their master’s degree and the durations of their studies. The integrated information is not publicly visible in the research portal. The integration functionality is currently undergoing testing, and any necessary checks and corrections are being carried out centrally for supervisor data. Therefore, there is no need to report any deficiencies at this time. Please note that advisor data will not be corrected this fall.
  2. In the second stage, the bibliographic information will be published in the research information system's research portal. The data will be made public on February 15, 2025. If there are any deficiencies in the data after this, they can be reported to acris@aalto.fi.

There will be some shortcomings in the data: the master’s theses of the School of Business (BIZ) will not be integrated at this stage, but the planning to include BIZ theses in ACRIS will begin later in collaboration with BIZ.  In addition, there are significant gaps in the thesis advisor information for all schools, partly because the information concerning thesis advisors external to Aalto is not integrated into ACRIS. In the future, we may investigate whether it is possible to integrate also master's level theses from previous years into ACRIS.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
