Student-driven projects to become Campus Sustainability Champions

This year, two student-led projects were selected as Campus Sustainability Champions. The awards were presented at the annual ACRE Day on 9 October 2024.

This year, the Aalto Foodsharing and Aalto Repair&Rewear projects were chosen as the Campus Sustainability Champions. Both projects are student-driven and promote both community spirit and sustainable development on campus. This year, the theme of the competition was Aalto Community Spirit - the spirit of togetherness and community on campus.
Honourable mentions in the competition went to the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources (minor) and Staff Scientist Pauli Lehto. The honourable mentions emphasised a new perspective and approach to promoting sustainable development.

"In Aalto Foodsharing our main activities include person-to-person food sharing at two community fridges, food pick-ups from collaboration partners and education about avoiding food waste. Thank you again ACRE for this recognition! We want also to thank TOKYO and AYY for providing spaces for our community fridges, our collaboration partners for sharing their food waste and everyone who has participated in making this initiative a reality.  There is no community action without community after all - so everyone in Aalto is welcome to join us, also staff", says Ronja Tammenpää from Aalto Foodsharing.

Duc Shu

The Sustainable Campus Team, a collaboration between Aalto University, Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and ACRE, selects a Campus Sustainability Champion from nominations received from the community each year. Last year, the Campus Wellbeing Route and The Test Site won the award. Duc Chu was present at the ACRE Day to talk about the Test Site project and its activities this year.

A campus sustainability champion can be an individual, initiative, project or other activity related to, for example, teaching, research or the arts, multiculturalism or biodiversity on campus. The prize has been awarded since 2017.

Sustainability Action Booster to support student projects

Aalto University's unique expense grant, the Sustainability Action Booster, supports collaborative, student-owned sustainability activities on and beyond our campus. For example, Aalto Repair & Rewear has been awarded the grant for its activities twice in 2023 and 2024, and Aalto Foodsharing for further scaling up its activities in 2024. Only the main applicant must be an Aalto student, so the grant will also enable community-based activities by staff and students, as well as cross-disciplinary and cross-organisational projects.
