Call for doctoral student tutors 2026-2027
1) sign up as tutor for Doctoral Orientation Days 31 August - 1 September 2026, OR
2) share your interest in being a tutor later this academic year.
This academic year we aim to collect a group of doctoral students, who are interested in being a tutor at one or more Doctoral Orientation Days throughout the academic year 2026-2027. Please sign up if you are available for the next Orientation Days OR if you are interested in acting as a tutor later on. In the academic year 2026-2027, the Orientation Days will be held on 31.8.-1.9.2026, 30.11.-1.12.2026, 8.-9.2.2027 and 17.-18.5.2027.
Sign up is open until Fri 21 August 2026.
As a tutor, you are assigned a group of doctoral students that you meet and greet in person at campus. Your role is to welcome the new doctoral students to the Aalto community, help them to get to know the everyday life in Aalto and familiarise them with the most important services on campus.
Tutors work with a tutor pair from another School, because tutor groups are mixed, meaning that each group has students from different Schools. We will create the pairs, but you can also make a wish to pair up with a specific person from another School.
If you cannot be a tutor this time, but sign up to share your interest in being a tutor later, you are not required to participate in anything this time, but are welcome to join the tutor briefing and the tutor lunch.
Required presence for tutors in August-September
Tutors are welcome to participate in the whole orientation programme, but are expected to participate at minimum as follows:
- Tue 25.8.2026 10:00-11:00 Tutor briefing & planning session. You will meet your tutor pair in the briefing and get your tutor t-shirt for 2026-2027.
- Optional: the briefing is followed by free lunch offered by the DOC+ initiative, 11:00-12:00.
- Mon 31.8.2026 10:55 Introducing the tutors
- Mon 31.8.2026 11:00-12:30 Meeting your tutor group over lunch (tutors' lunch will be compensated)

- Tue 1.9.2026 12:00-13:00 Meeting your tutor group over lunch (tutors' lunch will be compensated)

We value the time and effort our tutors are willing to put in to make the beginning of doctoral studies and research more pleasant and less confusing for the new doctoral students.
Credits for tutoring
Many of our doctoral programme have included an independently completed University practices I D -course to their curriculum since 1.8.2024 (usually under the General Research Studies module), which can be used to give credit for e.g. tutoring activities. More information from your doctoral programme's curriculum and Sisu (check the course code from your curriculum) and our instructions for independently completed individual studies. The possibility for credits is to be discussed with the supervising professor.
