Beat the Blues! - events for Aalto international students (spring 2023)

Beat the Blues! are Wellbeing-themed events for all international students at Aalto organized by Starting Point of Wellbeing and Wellbeing Ambassadors. Come as you are! We are offering a place to share experiences, make new friends and maybe learn something new about surviving - and thriving - in Finland!

Events will be on campus (Otakaari 1), free of charge, and are open to all international students at Aalto. However, we wish that you register in advance for each event you are taking part in (so that we are able to prepare enough snacks and coffee for everybody). You are warmly welcome!

Themes for the events (spring 2023) are:

Wed 15.2.23 at 16-18Job search in Finland (Otakaari 1, U523 Top Lounge) (Register in here)

This spring’s first Beat the Blues event offers a space and time for discussing and reflecting with other international students

Topic: Job search in Finland
As an international student, navigating through the job search processes in Finland can be stressful. Where can I find work, how to stand out as a candidate, what if I don’t speak Finnish, what to do after many rejections…

In this session, Niina Virtanen from Aalto Career Design Lab shares her insights on these topics, having worked for years with the employment of international talents. You will also get to hear the experiences of Betsy Akins, Aalto alumna from the IDBM Programme, who is currently working at the City of Espoo as Community Coordinator. Come share your thoughts, questions or worries with fellow students and get some tips on how to move forward with your job search. Coffee&tea and some snacks provided!

Thu 16.3.23 at 16-18: Imposter syndrome among international students in Aalto (Otakaari 1, room Y115) (Register in here)

The theme of the second Beat the Blues session of 2023 is imposter syndrome. This syndrome is quite common, and it causes people to doubt their talent and skills up to a point where they might feel like a fraud and are afraid of others figuring out their presumed lack of competence.

We will start the Beat the Blues session with a short introduction to the topic, and then continue with a relaxed and informal workshop. The event is organised on 16 March at 16–18 on Otaniemi campus (Otakaari 1, room Y115), and it’s open to all international students at Aalto. Coffee, tea, and some snacks provided!

Wed 12.4.23 at 16-18: Pre-Vappu and towards summer in Finland (Otakaari 1, room Y115) (Register in here)

Finnish summer is coming (believe or not) - but before that you must experience also 1st of May, Vappu, that starts already weeks before May, at least if you ask from students in Finland!

New and old Beat the Blues-participants are all welcome, so no matter if you have been to these events before, or not, we would love to see you with us!

Coffee&tea and some snacks provided!

Milja Mieskolainen: The Schuman internship at the European Parliament exceeded my expectations

Milja Mieskolainen, a Master's student in Accounting at the Aalto University School of Business, had already considered applying for an internship in the European Union, but thought it would be too challenging to get an internship. In spring 2023, however, she noticed an advertisement for internships and decided to give it a try, as there was an interesting vacancy in the Economic governance and EMU Scrutiny Unit. Applying did not prove difficult either. Milja applied, got the job and started her internship at the European Parliament in October.
