The following beginners’ courses do not require any prior studies:
- LC-7003 Survival Finnish Online
- LC-7004 Survival Finnish 1
- LC-7009 Get to know Finland
- LC-7210 Suomi 1
You can apply to other Finnish courses if
- you have passed the previous level course / exam at Aalto Language Centre.
- you have passed a Finnish course equivalent to the previous level in some other institution or you have studied the contents of the previous level on your own.
If you are still not sure about your level, study course descriptions in Sisu and contact the Contact Teacher Aija Elg. You can retake a course you have already passed (or a course below it) only if there is room in the group.
Aalto students
Degree students and doctoral students can register for Finnish courses in Sisu.
CEMS exchange students
CEMS exchange students who select Finnish as their CEMS FL3 register for Finnish courses in Sisu.
One-year exchange students
One-year exchange students can register for Finnish courses in Sisu. However, they have to be aware that they might lose their place if the group becomes full (degree students, doctoral students and staff members have priority). The teacher will inform them if the group becomes full.
Half-year exchange students
Unfortunately half-year exchange students cannot be accepted to regular Finnish courses because of the strong demand. However, they can register in Sisu for the following courses:
- LC-7003 Survival Finnish Online
- LC-7004 Survival Finnish 1
- LC-7005 Survival Finnish 2
- LC-7009 Get to know Finland
These courses do not allow to continue to more advanced Finnish courses
Half-year exchange students can also apply for Finnish courses organised by Aalto Open University. The course fee is 15 euros / 1 ECTS credit.
Staff members
Staff members and their spouses can apply for special Finnish courses for staff. For more information, contact [email protected].
Staff members can also participate in all regular Finnish courses at the Language Centre without a course fee. Registration instructions:
- Fill in the Application for the right to pursue non graduate studies form
- Send the form to the Contact Teacher Aija Elg by email
Others
Those not studying nor working at Aalto cannot be accepted to Finnish courses because of the strong demand. However, they can apply for Finnish courses through the Aalto Open University.

Which course can you take in the new system?
Here is the list of new courses you can take if you have completed a course in the old system (before autumn 2020). For most courses, there are two possibilities. If you choose the lower level of the two, you will revise some things you have already seen on previous courses but also learn some new things. If you choose the higher level of the two, you will have to study some contents on your own before the course to catch up. For this, you can check the course description of the lower level course in Sisu in order to see what you have not studied earlier.
Old course > New course
