Kide – Wood Program

The location

Kide will be built on Kuhmo's market square. Surrounded by shops, restaurants and the City Hall, the market is a focal point of the town's daily life. Kide has been designed to cater for events as well as daily market activities, allowing people to explore and climb the stage, take in the market from a height, or have a coffee break on the steps.

Kide is built in collaboration with Kuhmo's city council. Kuhmo is a city in central-east Finland known for its musical festivals in summer and strong wood industry. It is the home of Woodpolis, a hub for local timber companies to work together with research institutes to innovate sustainable wood technologies. Through previous collaboration between Aalto University and Woodpolis, the idea was born to combine the worlds of music and timber in the form of Kide.

The main challenge posed by the site is the 600km distance to our workshop in Espoo. After prefabricating the components in our workshop at Aalto University, we will be on-site in Kuhmo at the end of May to bring Kide to life.
