The doctoral research examines new solutions for electrified powertrains in heavy mobile machinery, particularly wheel loaders and mining loaders. The problem studied is how to transition cost‑effectively from diesel toward hybrid and electric powertrain systems in a way that maintains productivity while improving energy efficiency.

The research aims to identify solutions that allow smaller components to be used in these machines and improve overall efficiency. It develops and evaluates two solutions in which the electric motors used to move the machine and operate the bucket can work together to move the machine. In the first solution, the motors are connected mechanically. In the second, they are connected through hydraulics. The solutions are analyzed using simulations that make use of recorded wheel loader operation, as well as real time simulation models and a virtual environment. The results are compared with a system in which the electric motors operate separately.

The research shows that the mechanical solution significantly reduces the power required from the drive motor during loading. The mining loader also achieves the same productivity as the comparison system, even though its drive motor is more than 30% smaller. The drawback of the mechanical connection is a slight increase in energy consumption. In a simulation of wheel loader operation, the hydraulic solution reduces energy consumption by approximately 10% compared with the reference system when a new operating mode is used. Both solutions enable more effective use of the electric motors and improve the loader’s overall efficiency.
