Monitoring of doctoral students. What if, despite good guidance, things don't progress?

Info sessions for supervising professors and thesis advisors around once in a month arranged by Doctoral education services.

How can we monitor thesis progress and manage situations where the doctoral student is not meeting expectations? How do we recognize when they need help, and determine what kind of help is needed? Furthermore, how can we identify when a student may not be able to finish their project, and what can be done in that situation?
