Build holistic wellbeing

The changing nature and the increasing demands of knowledge work are making wellbeing a key priority in a sustainable working life. To mitigate the downsides of the transformation of work a holistic and proactive approach to wellbeing is a must.

Although the demands of modern knowledge work have increased, human biology and psychology have not changed. As a consequence, many of us are experiencing higher levels and stress, leading to exhaustion and the risk of burn-out. Taking care of our wellbeing holistically and proactively has become crucial in creating a more sustainable future of work.

A holistic approach to wellbeing means that it includes many non-work-related aspects, such as nutrition, sleep, and exercise. A proactive approach means that we aim to prevent possible problems by taking care of our wellbeing in everyday work.

Elements of wellbeing

Physical

Stress is not intrinsically negative but if it becomes chronic, consequences can be severe. Stress needs to be balanced with energy management and recovery.

Psychological

From the psychological perspective, self-awareness and self-leadership are key. This means gaining clarity on our values and goals, building motivation and working on our thought patterns, self-talk and habits.

Social

Social wellbeing refers to the quality of one’s relationships among colleagues and also family/friends. Positive interactions and collaboration are key to our wellbeing. However, as work becomes increasingly time- and place-independent, work relationships may weaken and require more effort.

Reflection

Consider your wellbeing in the physical, psychological, and social dimensions.

Which proactive actions can you take to foster your wellbeing in a time- and location-independent future?
