Aalto University and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have signed a broad multi-year collaboration agreement which aims to deepen the universities’ cooperation in multiple fields. The Presidents of the respective universities signed the agreement at Aalto University’s campus on Monday 3 December.

In its initial stage, the collaboration will include student and faculty exchange and mobility, joint teaching, joint research projects, and concerted efforts in advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. SUTD will also host Aalto University’s faculty for visiting professorships.

SUTD was founded in 2009 in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SUTD’s academic programmes incorporate elements of innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking, and local and international industry collaboration. It is considered to be one of the top rising global engineering schools.

‘We are delighted to begin a deep collaboration with our colleagues at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. We share a lot of similarities in how we incorporate design, science and technology into cross-disciplinary research and education. We look forward to offering our students and faculty unique opportunities with one of the top rising global academic communities in Singapore,’ said Ilkka Niemelä, President of Aalto University.

‘SUTD seeks to better the world by design and technology by providing global exposure to our students and faculty. This enables them to understand the needs, challenges and explore the myriad possible solutions in the world. All of us at SUTD are most pleased to deepen our partnership with Aalto University across extensive areas that benefit students, faculty, and research of both universities. By collaborating, we expand the realms of design possibilities and solutions for mankind across different cultures from Europe to Asia. We look forward to a deep and fruitful collaboration over the years,’ said SUTD President, Professor Chong Tow Chong.

Serving societal needs

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is Singapore’s fourth public university, and one of the first universities in the world to incorporate the art and science of design and technology into a transdisciplinary, human-centric curriculum. SUTD seeks to advance knowledge and nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs. SUTD also recently topped a list of emerging engineering schools in the world in a study conducted by MIT.

A research-intensive university, SUTD is distinguished by its unique East and West academic programmes which incorporate elements of innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking and local and international industry collaborations. SUTD’s key focus areas are Healthcare, Cities and Aviation, supported by capabilities in Artificial Intelligence/Data Science and Digital Manufacturing. Multiple post-graduate opportunities are available. In addition, skill-based professional education and training courses are also available at SUTD Academy.

Olli Ikkala and Esa Saarinen found a common thread in baroque music and lecturing

Olli Ikkala will continue his research on nature-inspired materials and will find himself again as an organist after his busy research career. Esa Saarinen, on the other hand, continued to lecture the Philosophy and Systems Thinking (Filosofia ja systeemiajattelu) course to packed halls this spring. When they met, they discussed the organ and the atmosphere of the lectures.
