Decolonising Sustainability: Reshaping Our Approach

Decolonising sustainability

Sustainability, a concept that has become increasingly vital in our rapidly changing world, is not a one-size-fits-all idea. The conventional narrative surrounding sustainability often overlooks a crucial aspect; its historical context shaped by colonisation, exploitation, and cultural dominance. Colonisation brought with it a complex web of exploitation, oppression, and domination that significantly shaped how we perceive sustainability today. Traditional sustainability narratives have often perpetuated these dominant ideologies, leading to the neglect of local knowledge, cultural diversity, and indigenous practices.

To create a more inclusive, equitable, and culturally diverse understanding of sustainability, we must embark on a journey of decolonisation. Decolonising sustainability is an emerging concept that seeks to critically examine and reshape the way we understand, teach, and practice sustainability. This paradigm shift addresses historical inequalities, power dynamics, and cultural biases that have deeply rooted themselves within the field.

Decolonisation acknowledges that the historical legacies of colonisation have profoundly influenced sustainability narratives and practices and demands a fresh approach that values different worldviews and embraces the contributions of marginalised communities. It's an opportunity to bridge the gap between those who have traditionally held power in sustainability and those who have been left in the shadows. A decolonised approach to sustainability also celebrates cultural diversity. It recognises the wealth of knowledge and practices that indigenous and local communities bring to the table. Their deep connection with nature, traditional ecological knowledge, and sustainable practices can significantly contribute to our efforts in building a sustainable and resilient future.

Decolonising sustainability isn't a one-time event. It's an ongoing process that invites open dialogue, critical reflection, and a commitment to change. This journey towards a more inclusive, equitable, and culturally diverse understanding of sustainability will be transformative. It is an opportunity for the global community to come together and reshape the narrative of sustainability.
