In the Chemical engineering major in Aalto Bachelor's Programme in Science and Technology students learn the basic skills and knowledge required for a transition from anfossil fuel-based to a sustainable society. Utilizing natural resources is vital for a sustainable way of living and will be crucial for future economic growth, as it will provide also new business opportunities. 

The focus of the major is on biotechnology and biomaterials, complementing the strong basics in mathematics and programming obtained in the basic studies. Harnessing the tools offered by chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology and engineering the major introduces how bio-based “thinking” will help in finding novel solutions to make this world more sustainable and create innovative products and solutions for applications ranging from construction materials and textiles to biofuels and medicine. 

Upon graduating from the Chemical engineering major in Aalto Bachelor's Programme in Science and Technology, graduates will 

have a comprehensive understanding of fundamentals in mathematics and programming to build their engineering skills on. 

have a broad basis in chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry to build on specialized knowledge in the Master’s studies. 

have learned to operate in a multidisciplinary environment to work on societal challenges. Throughout several courses students get exposed to knowledge and ideas from e.g., BIZ or ARTS. 

know the fundamentals of sustainable processes in the area of bioproducts and biotechnology. 

Language of instruction

The language of instruction in the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology and the Chemical Engineering major is English, meaning that all courses and exams are in English. Students with sufficient proficiency in Finnish can also choose the 20-25 credit minor subject of the bachelor’s degree in Finnish.

Studies at the master’s level can also be completed entirely in English.

Tuition fees and scholarships

Aalto University’s tuition fee for bachelor’s programmes taught in English is 12 000 euros per academic year. Tuition fees apply to citizens of countries other than those of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

Aalto University has a scholarship programme to support non-EU/EEA citizens who study in a fee-charging degree programme. The scholarship may cover 100% or 50% of the tuition fee.

Structure of studies

The bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) is composed of basic studies of the programme (65 ECTS mathematics, programming, industrial engineering and management, obligatory languages, Aalto studies, orientation), the major in chemical engineering (65 ECTS including BSc thesis and seminar), the minor (20-25 ECTS) and elective studies (25-30 ECTS).

You will get basic knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry. Furthermore, you will be introduced to material sciences and polymer technology, renewable raw materials, product design, and related industrial processes. Your studies will be completed through a Bachelor thesis with a topic relevant to your studies.

The major in the bachelor's degree is Chemical Engineering.


The study environment in Aalto University is strongly international and studies are conducted in multicultural groups. Aalto University also offers diverse possibilities for developing your global competence by e.g., completing part of the degree abroad in an international partner university, taking a summer course abroad or acting as a tutor for first-year students.

After graduating from the Chemical Engineering major in Aalto Bachelor's Programme in Science and Technology, you are directly entitled to enter the following master's programme at the School of CHEM.

With a few additional courses, you can also continue to these other master's programmes at the School of CHEM:

  • Chemistry and Materials Science
  • Master's Programme in Life Science Technologies, major Biosystems and Biomaterials Engineering

Graduates can work at the interface of natural sciences, engineering and programming within the chemical engineering or biotechnology industries or in a field related to life sciences.

This major gives you opportunity to select various MSc level study paths, after which many doors are open to you. Graduates of our Masters programmes can 

  • work in research, strategy, or management positions in the forest or chemical industries or in related equipment manufacturing companies (e.g., Metsä, Stora Enso, UPM, Andritz, Valmet, Kemira) 
  • Work in leading engineering consultancy companies (e.g., Sweco, AFRY) 
  • Work as a renewable energy expert in big energy companies (e.g., St1, Neste, Fortum) 
  • explore entrepreneurial pathways and starting one’s own company 
  • continue a research career in academia 

Aalto University has well-established career services to support students’ employment in Finland and abroad. Because of the flexible curriculum, Aalto students can also work already during their studies and guarantee themselves entry positions before graduation. 

Research focus

Research at the School of Chemical Engineering focuses on forest products technologies, chemical engineering, industrial biotechnology, materials science and nanotechnology, metals and minerals processing and energy technology. The research community strives towards sustainable solutions and breakthroughs for bio- and circular economy by scientific and engineering excellence. Students have the opportunity to interact with leading researchers in their respective field, and be involved in frontier research projects.

Students from around the world joined the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology – meet Dylan, Anna and Ishaan

In September 2018, we received 39 new students in the Data Science and Digital Systems and Design majors that are part of the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology taught in English. About one third of the new students in this programme are from Finland, while the rest are from countries like Vietnam, South Korea, India, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Russia, Italy and the USA.
