Description

Master’s Programme in Manufacturing and its study track Additive Manufacturing for Full Flexibility is an international double degree programme supported by EIT Manufacturing. The programme is a combination of studying manufacturing science including physics of additive manufacturing processes, mechanical design including exploiting the design freedoms enabled for more customized products and services, and production management including the flexibility enabled for smaller lot production.

A student who graduates from the Additive Manufacturing for Full Flexibility (AM) shall:

  • Be able to utilise methodological knowledge in the area of manufacturing challenges, and master a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in multidisciplinary decision support systems for manufacturing
  • be able to critically, independently and creatively participate in strategic work to meet manufacturing-related problems and to be able to relate these measures to sustainable social development
  • be able to implement the gained engineering expertise in AM to create new or improved methods, techniques, products, and services in the field
  • be able to think beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries to find innovative solutions to real-world problems and to come up with new ideas;
  • be able to draw up plans and to make decisions foreseeing future consequences from a scientific, ethical, and societal perspective;
  • be able to turn innovations in the area into feasible and successful business solutions;
  • be able to profitably work in small size teams and contexts by taking into account all relevant elements and showing effective decision-making and leadership abilities.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English.

Tuition fees and scholarships

All sudents admitted to Master's Programme in Manufacturing are eligible for scholarships and liable for tuition fees according to EIT Manufacturing's tuition fee & scholarship scheme. Students are not liable for paying tuiton fees to Aalto University or eligible for Aalto University scholarships. EIT Manufacturing scholarship scheme is subject to annual updates. See programme website for more information.

Structure of studies

The programme is a double degree programme, which means that you will study at two European universities and in two different countries. Upon fulfilment of all degree requirements, students receive two degrees: one from the entry university and another one from the exit university.

The universities partners in Additive Manufacturing for Full Flexibility (AM) are currently:

  • Aalto University, Finland
  • TU Wien, Austria
  • University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland
  • The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), Switzerland

Please note that both entry and exit universities might be subject to changes. Kindly check this on programme website before applying.

During the first year students are committed to study a total of 40-50 ECTS technical courses and 10-20 ECTS Innovation and Entrepreneurship courses (60 ECTS total) whereas in the second year studies consist of 10-20 ECTS of technical courses, 10-20 ECTS of innovation and entrepreneurship courses and 30 ECTS for the Master’s thesis (60 ECTS total).

The curriculum at Aalto University is published in Student Guide.

Master's Programme in Manufacturing

Specialisations

The students can select their preferred first (entry) and second (exit) year universities. Each university has a unique specialisation area, which allows students to select their own second year area of expertise. At Aalto University, students can learn about physics of additive manufacturing processes, mechanical design including exploiting the design freedoms enabled for more customized products and services, and production management including the flexibility enabled for smaller lot production. Read more on the programme website.

Internationalisation

The programme is a double degree programme with integrated, mandatory geopraphical mobility. This means that you will study at two European universities and in two different countries. Upon fulfilment of all degree requirements, students receive two degrees: one from the entry university and another one from the exit university. In addition, students receive an EIT Label Certificate.

Further study opportunities

Graduates of the programme are awarded Master of Science (Technology) degree which gives them a great foundation for doctoral studies and post-doc positions at Aalto University or internationally. to continue to doctoral level studies at Aalto University or internationally. In addition, a similar degree is awarded by the other institution where the student completed the programme, widening the further study and career opportunities internationally.

Career opportunities

The possible future career for the graduates includes rapid prototyping, flexible pattern and mold manufacturing, lightweight systems, and flexible manufacturing systems. During the master programme experience, the students will learn the latest theoretical knowledge and know how to apply their skills in practical real-life problems and a solid background with well-founded scientific knowledge with a significant technical and application content, favouring immediate entrance to job market.

Research focus

Master’s Programme in Manufacturing study track Additive Manufacturing for Full Flexibility (AM) is a combination of studying manufacturing science including physics of additive manufacturing processes, mechanical design including exploiting the design freedoms enabled for more customized products and services, and production management including the flexibility enabled for smaller lot production. During the programme students will gain new skills in these areas. In manufacturing science, relevant fields include molten material physics, heat transfer, and deformation. In design engineering, relevant fields are numerical and topological optimization, process physics simulation, new concept generation and design engineering. In production management, relevant fields include logistics, digitalization and quality.
