Continuing as a member of the Aalto community after retirement
Aalto Seniors and alumni activities
At Aalto University, you have been creating a meaningful future for the coming generations with us, and you have contributed to the development of our university into a world-class actor. As an employee you have been a valuable part of our community, and we hope that you will belong to our expanding community in the future as well.
So, join the Aalto University Seniors group and thus stay in touch with your old colleagues and your own school after your retirement.
The Aalto University Seniors promotes interaction with Aalto University and organises visits to different units of the university, trips to sites of scientific, artistic or cultural interest, and common informal gatherings. Joining the network does not bind you to anything and you can always choose how actively you want to participate.
You can join the Seniors electronically in the AlumniNET portal of Aalto University's alumni network (alumninet.aalto.fi), where you can register as a member of the Aalto University Seniors group. You will find the latest information on the Seniors activities on the group's website. At the same time, you will join the Aalto University alumni network.
The senior activities primarily use electronic means to stay in touch with the members. The newsletter sent twice a year tells about the programme for the coming season and other topical matters. For the time being, those who do not have an email address will receive a newsletter by post.
Become a member of the Seniors at the address alumninet.aalto.fi. At the same time, please specify in which position and which school did you work at Aalto University. This will take you directly into the core of the communications and events of your own former school.
Welcome to join the Aalto University alumni network and Seniors!

Professors emeriti practices – professors emeritus and professors emerita
Aalto University regards highly its distinguished professors who have made a long academic career. The term professor emeritus/emerita (plural emeriti) refers to a person with a significant academic career as a professor in the field of science and/or art, and who has worked successfully as part of the Aalto community for several years before retiring.
By signing an agreement on a professor emeritus/emerita position at Aalto University a retiring professor will remain an active member of the Aalto community and will be assigned:
- a User ID to Aalto University's ICT systems
- an @aalto.fi email account
- the right to use the Emeriti Lounge intended for professors emeritus/emerita
The department HR will help you in drawing up the agreement, and it is signed by the dean of the school.
Further information from department HR’s and from the emeriti code of practice:
Aalto University wants to keep in close contact with professors emeritus/emerita, invite them to different events and receive feedback on its operations. The university wishes that professors emeritus/emerita would still visit the campus. To enable this, the university provides a meeting place, where they have a chance to meet other Aalto community members and where they can bring their own guests.
The Emeriti Lounge is located on Otakaari 1 (Undergraduate Centre), in the office of the former president. The room is for meeting colleagues or guests. In the room you can use, for example, a workstation and coffee machine, and find topical Aalto material. The door to the room is kept unlocked; if necessary, the doors to the corridor can be opened using an access card. We monitor the use of the room and how it functions, so please leave your greetings in the guest book placed in the Emeriti Lounge.
Use of UniSport sports services
Did you know that you are entitled to continue using the UniSport sports services at a staff price even when you are retired from your work at Aalto University?
To enjoy this benefit, you need a certificate entitling you to using the sports services granted by Aalto University. The easiest way of getting it is to ask your HR coordinator to sign the form “Certificate for sports services” when retirements days are at hand.
Take this certificate and your ID with you to a UniSport site when you go and buy a season pass.
