The Doctoral Programme trains Doctors of Science (Technology), skilled in independent research work, for positions in academic and business sectors as well as in public administration
The doctoral programme focuses on the development of key technologies and on research problems posed by great societal challenges. Energy, environment and health and well-being are central themes.
The focus areas of the programme are physics, mathematics, biomedical engineering, computer science, and industrial engineering. Graduates are prepared for demanding academic research and expert positions in development and management.

Doctoral candidates at Aalto University can take the degrees of Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration), Doctor of Arts (Art and Design) and Doctor of Science (Technology/Architecture). The admissions are organised individually by each doctoral program.

The majority of the dissertations are article based dissertations including several publications in referred international journals. In the field of art and design, a dissertation may also include artistic components like an art production or a series of art productions connected to each other.

The university has several international thematic doctoral programmes running under the six Aalto doctoral programmes.
