Doctoral programmes

Aalto University prepares doctoral candidates to become highly qualified researchers and experts in most demanding positions. Doctoral education is carried out in a unique multidisciplinary international scientific community. More than 250 doctors graduate every year.

The key element in doctoral training is the relationship between supervisor and the doctoral candidate. High quality field based education and customized transferable skills training together with network-building ensure that the doctoral candidates’ scientific qualifications develop along with their individually oriented proficiency for worklife skills. The University also provides career guidance and mentoring.

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Fabric

Aalto Doctoral Programme in Arts, Design and Architecture

The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture offers an international doctoral programme for those seeking careers in art, design, film, media or architecture. The special feature of the programme is that the dissertation can also include art or design productions.

Aalto Doctoral Programme in Chemical Engineering

The Aalto Doctoral Programme in Chemical Engineering comprises 7 research fields which focus on forest products technologies, chemical engineering, industrial biotechnology, materials science and nanotechnology, metals and minerals processing and energy technology. The Departments of Bioproducts and Biosystems (Bio2), Chemical and Metallurgical, Chemistry and Materials Science are jointly responsible for the programme.

How to apply for doctoral studies?

Doctoral candidates at Aalto University can pursue the degrees of Doctor of Science (Technology), Doctor of Arts, Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administation), and Doctor of Science (Architecture). The target time for the doctoral degree is four years. The admissions are organised individually by each doctoral program.

Doctoral dissertations

Aalto university doctoral dissertations are published open in Aaltodoc publication archive. The majority of the dissertations are article based dissertations including several publications in referred international journals. Monographs are accepted, too. In the field of art and design, a dissertation may also include artistic components like an art production or a series of art productions connected to each other.

Networking

Aalto University is actively networking nationally and internationally and the department professors have excellent individual contacts worldwide. This provides the doctoral candidates various possibilities to get contacts and peer support.
