DoD schedule for Master’s Thesis Process in 2023-2024

Starting from January 2023 all students follow the regular schedule.

If you miss the Thesis Plan Proposal presentation date in autumn, please discuss in your major/programme of an alternative schedule. 

Thesis Plan Proposal, Part I and Part II are handed in according to each major’s guidelines. 

According to new ARTS guidelines, the thesis must be presented before the final hand-in. At DoD, that will happen after completing Part II. Presentations are organized by majors. NOTE: In autumn 2022 students who started their thesis before 1.8.2022 can optionally present their final thesis in December after submitting on 21.11. Please agree with your supervisor which way you present.

The diplomas will be given to the students in the next graduation ceremony following the date when the diplomas are ready. The student can also acquire their diploma from the Learning Services after it is ready. The graduation ceremonies will be organized January 11th 2024, June 19th 2024 and October 1st 2025.

General instructions for the Master's programme in Design (please see below for additional major specific instructions)

  • Start your thesis work by completing MUO-E0023 Thesis Plan Orientation (TPO)
  • Thesis supervisor will be selected based on your thesis topic by the process defined in your study major.
  • Supervisor approves your topic and thesis advisor / advisors and makes sure that you get advising and feedback on your thesis. If the advisor is from outside of Aalto or works for Aalto only part-time, we can pay max. 10 hours/student for the advisor.
  • Supervisor approves thesis Part I (10 cr). For hand-in, follow the instructions given by your major/programme.
  • Oral presentation of Part II is mandatory and needs to be completed before the thesis is handed in for examination. Please follow the instructions of your major.
  • Thesis abstract is your maturity test. Supervisor approves maturity test. (more instructions below)
  • Thesis examiners are named when thesis Part II is ready for the presentation. Programme director confirms the examiners, supervisor is usually one of the examiners and the other one is for example programme faculty or an external expert from the field of study.
  • Take the originality report in Turnitin when all the text parts including the abstract and the reference are ready and send it to your thesis advisor who checks the report. If your advisor is from outside of Aalto, please check the result report with your supervisor.
  • Apply for examination by submitting your final thesis in eage (incl. written part and production part / documentation of production) (instructions below)
  • If your thesis includes tangible production part and the examiners haven’t examined it in an earlier phase, please contact your examiners to schedule the examination of the production part.
  • When you plan to graduate, please make sure that your personal study plan (PSP) is up to date in SISU. 
  • Apply for graduation in SISU (instructions in sisu help and in your programme's graduation page).
  • Your thesis grade (based on examiners grading) will be confirmed in the next programme committee meeting after hand-in deadline.
