Curriculum information about study units and study unit implementations

A study unit is a planned unit of study that is specified in the curriculum and that can be completed separately. The curriculum defines the study unit name, scope, intended learning outcomes and core contents as well as any other information that is valid for the whole curriculum period. In everyday language, study units are often referred to as courses. A study unit implementation is a concrete arrangement of a study unit. Study unit implementations may vary in terms of their teaching and assessment methods or languages.

Descriptions of study units and study unit implementations

The responsible teacher (i.e. the teacher responsible for the study unit, also teacher-in-charge at Aalto) provides the curriculum information concerning the study unit and its implementations for the next two academic years using the Curriculum Planner tool. The school Learning Services supports and coordinates the process of writing the study unit descriptions. The curriculum information is made visible to the students through the student information system Sisu.

Teaching is developed continually. The descriptions of study unit implementations entered into the curriculum should be left sufficiently open-ended to allow teaching to be developed flexibly during the curriculum period. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the descriptions provide students with sufficient information to support their study planning and choice of study units.

  • The curriculum should not include small details on the grading procedures (such as ‘60% of the grade is based on the examination and 40% on assigned work’) or number hours allocated to various modes of contact learning (‘lectures 16 h, laboratory work 10 h’). However, the assessment methods (e.g. ‘examination’, ‘laboratory work’) and the teaching methods (‘lectures’, ‘math exercises’) must be indicated.

The teacher responsible for the study unit or its implementation may prepare a syllabus for the study unit implementation. The syllabus is published in MyCourses no later than three weeks before the study unit implementation begins. The syllabus describes the implementation of the study unit in greater detail, elaborating the assessment and study methods if necessary.

Information on study units and study unit implementations

It is recommended that curriculum information on courses is produced in Finnish and English, and in the fields of technology and art and design, also in Swedish. This means the name of the study unit, as well as the learning outcomes and a description of the key content. Curriculum information on the implementations of the study unit is provided in the languages of study attainment of the implementation. This means a description of the working and assessment methods and, if necessary, a description of which students will be accepted for the implementation.

During the curriculum period 2026–2028, language versions of the curriculum information in the languages of study attainment are required. It is recommended, but not necessary, to always produce information in Finnish, Swedish and English (in the field of business and economics, Finnish and English). Producing curriculum information in different languages helps students to verbalize their own competencies and communicate about it both in Finland and internationally. This also makes it easier to find and familiarize yourself with Aalto University's education offerings. As part of the implementation of the language guidelines, we also ensure that the terminology of our fields is produced in the national languages.
