The Department of Applied Physics at the Aalto University School of Science is looking for

STAFF SCIENTIST

to a permanent employment contract at the Otaniemi campus starting in August 2021 or as agreed.

Job description

The Staff Scientist will be responsible for supporting the research of the experimental physics research groups especially in tasks related to measurement electronics, vacuum technology, handling of chemicals, materials characterization as well as procurement and maintenance of equipment in collaboration with the researchers. The Staff Scientist will also participate in the research and doctoral education in a supporting role. Typical research activities performed by the research groups include synthesis and characterization of thin films, surface sensitive microscopy, characterization of solar and fuel cell materials and devices, and advanced optical microscopy and optical measurements. The Staff Scientist may also support the teaching staff in the procurement, development and maintenance of student laboratory equipment, as well as other tasks in the teaching of experimental physics. The Staff Scientist does not, however, perform own independent research activities.

An important role for the Staff Scientist will be to act as the responsible person for laboratory safety at the department which also involves development of lab safety and training of staff in the different safety topics. Furthermore, the Staff Scientist is actively involved in the upkeep of building infrastructure as well as building administration.

The required qualification of the applicants

  • doctoral degree in physics or other applicable research field (such as chemical engineering) and
  • fluency in both spoken and written English.

Earlier experience in vacuum technology, measurement electronics, optics, microscopy, radiation detectors, materials characterization, chemistry and chemical safety, biology and cell culturing, laboratory safety and laboratory-based teaching is considered an advantage.  

Salary, working time and place of work

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The applicants may also present their own salary expectations. In addition to salary, the contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.
The annual total working time of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland.
