This overview provides guidance on navigating Workday using assistive technologies such as screen readers and keyboards, and tips on how to interact with Workday.
The information on this task is organized alphabetically and describes:
- Accessibility tips for global UI elements.
- Controls and components used across Workday.
- Specific pages and tasks.
Most Workday tasks have heading (level 1) that identifies the central goal or associated business process. Some tasks also have nested headings that provide additional structure and details.
Common Regions in Workday
When accessing Workday with a screen reader, the following regions display on most pages:
• Banner
• Search
• Main
Additional Regions
The following UI regions display on some pages:
• Action toolbar
• Error and warnings
• Navigation containing a list of items
• Reading pane with details about navigation items
To set date and time inputs including the year, month, day, hour, minute, second, and millisecond, use:
• Left arrow to move to previous field
• Right arrow to move to next field
• Up arrow to increase value or Down arrow to decrease value. Alternatively, enter the desired numeric value directly.
Errors prevent a user from submitting a form or completing a task. Warnings provide a recommendation but don’t prevent task completion.
Workday displays errors or warnings when you:
• Enter information outside a valid range.
• Don’t complete a required field.
Errors and warnings with a specific input field on the View All window and the Errors and Warnings page has the following controls:
• Close window.
• Select a field.
• Hear details about an error or warning.
To interact with popups while using a screen reader:
• When you submit a form, we focus the keyboard on the Errors and Warnings at the end of the form. Alternatively, you can press Tab.
Prompts are a control that allows single-option or multiple-option selection.
• To filter the list of options, type a Search term and press enter/return.
• To display all available options leave the prompt empty and press enter/return.
• To navigate when options are displayed, use:
• Down arrow to navigate to the next item.
• Up arrow to navigate to the previous item.
• Right arrow to open a sub menu
• Left arrow to close a sub menu
• Enter/Return or space to select an option.
• Select a single option. Workday closes the menu once you've made a selection.
• Esc to close the prompt.
• To navigate to selected options, first ensure that your focus is in the prompt input. Then use:
• Up or down arrow to navigate to a selected option.
• Delete to remove an option from the prompt selection.
• If a Related Actions button is present on an option, use Alt+R on PC or Option-R on Mac.
Select a single option. Workday closes the menu once you've made a selection.
Select 1 or more options. Press Esc to close the prompt.
The Related Actions button enables you to see all actions related to a specific item. Use:
• Enter/Return or spacebar to select/open.
• Up Arrow to navigate to previous item
• Down Arrow to navigate to the next item
The rich text editor provides formatting for text fields. Use:
• Alt+0 on PC or Option-0 on Mac – Opens the Accessibility Instructions dialog window.
• Alt+F10 on PC or Option-F10 on Mac – Enters the toolbar or tab list of the currently open dialog window.
• Alt+F11 on PC or Option-F11 on Mac – Enters the elements path.
• Right arrow – Moves to the next toolbar button within the group, context menu suboption, dialog window element, or dialog window tab while in the tab list.
• Down arrow – Moves to the next drop-down list or context menu option.
• Left arrow – Moves to the previous toolbar button within the group, context menu parent option, elements path element, dialog window element, or dialog window tab while in the tab list.
• Up arrow – Moves to the previous drop-down list or context menu option.
• Space or Enter/Return – Activates a toolbar button, a context menu option, a drop-down list option, an elements path element, or a dialog window tab once selected. Also enters a context menu submenu, if it is available.
• To interact with a suggested option, use:
• Down arrow to move to the next option.
• Up arrow to move to the previous option.
• Enter/return key to activate a suggested option.
Use the following keys to navigate the notifications:
• Tab to the left pane with notifications.
• Use Up arrow to navigate to more recent messages.
• Use Down arrow to navigate to older messages.
• Set focus on a message on the left panel to have it display in the right reading pane.
On every page in Workday, there is a Skip to Main Content link that you can access by pressing Tab. Use the link to move your device’s focus on the main content of the displayed page.
