Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with 14 000 students and a staff of 5000, of which more than 400 are professors. Our main campus is located in Espoo, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.
The Department of Computer Science is an internationally-oriented community and home to world-class research in modern computer science, combining research on foundations and innovative applications. With over 40 professors and more than 450 employees from 50 countries, it is the largest department at Aalto University and the leading computer science research unit in northern Europe. Computer science research at Aalto University ranks high in several international surveys (7th in Europe and 1st in the Nordics (NTU 2023); and 88th worldwide in Times Higher Education subject ranking 2025).
The Department of Computer Science is now looking for a
Postdoctoral Researcher in Geometric Algorithms.
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our computational geometry team through the grant entitled "Algorithms in hyperbolic geometry" funded by the Research Council of Finland. Computational geometry is the theoretical basis for all types of geometric processing of data, and it is an important and vibrant area of Theoretical Computer Science (TCS). The research will be focused on algorithms and computational complexity in Euclidean and especially non-Euclidean (e.g. hyperbolic) settings.
Your role and goals
Your primary goal in this position will be to do excellent research on the frontiers of geometric algorithms, both in collaboration with the team and in your existing professional network. We aim to continue publishing in the top international venues in theoretical computer science and computational geometry.
In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in teaching following the standard practices at the department.
Your network and team
You will be working closely with the Computational Geometry Group, which currently has 5 members: two PhD students, 2 postdocs, and the PI (Sándor Kisfaludi-Bak). Aalto University and the Helsinki region have a strong presence in theoretical computer science, and collaboration outside the group (as well as international collaboration) is highly encouraged.
Your experience and background
Requirements for postdoc applicants
- Ph.D. in theoretical computer science, mathematics, or a closely related area
- Research-level experience with the design and analysis of combinatorial algorithms
- Deep interest or familiarity with computational geometry / geometric algorithms
- Interest in or familiarity with at least some of the following: discrete mathematics and graph theory, non-Euclidean geometry, computational complexity theory, computational topology
Experience with hyperbolic geometry is not required.
What we offer
The starting salary for the position is 4229,48 EUR per month. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 612 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus.
There is generous travel support for conferences and research visits. We often travel to various conferences and workshops, and we also have international visitors at regular intervals. You will have opportunities to establish new collaborations and expand your professional network.
Ready to apply?
To apply for the position, please submit your application including the attachments mentioned below as one single PDF document in English through our online recruitment system by using the link on Aalto University’s web page ("Apply Now”).
(1) Letter of motivation (including information on the above listed requirements for the position)
(2) CV including list of publications
(3) Degree certificates and academic transcripts
(4) Contact details of at least two referees
The deadline for applications is 08.07.2026. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found. Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period, reopen the application process, and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
