Despite two long years of the pandemic, the Aalto University Summer School adapted well considering the circumstances and transferred most of the summer courses online. However, nothing beats inviting students from around the world to take part in our short-term study programs at Aalto University! We can finally meet face to face and allow all our students to experience the best Finnish summer and spring can offer.

This week our seventh edition of the Digital Business Master Class (DBMC) finally kicked off on Aalto University campus for the first time in two years. We don’t know who were more excited – the course participants or the Summer School team themselves.

The interactive and fast-paced graduate-level course focuses on digital technologies as tools for building businesses. During the Master Class, students learn how companies transform their processes and systems by implementing digital technologies.

Challenge-based learning is an integral part of the Master Class. Students work on real company cases in international and multidisciplinary teams. The business cases are always done collaborating with partner companies, ensuring that the themes are relevant to the current business environment.

Digital peacemaking and conflict resolution as highly relevant business cases

‘This spring’s business cases were developed in collaboration with PwC, Posti, Digimuseo and CMI (Crisis Management Initiative). All of the cases challenge our students’ thinking and help them build their digital business skills. As examples of the project topics, DBMC students get to work on developing Digimuseo’s business model as a platform that generates income for museums and offers cultural experiences for a large number of people. Additionally, CMI’s case related to digital peacemaking and conflict resolution couldn’t be more topical at the moment.’ says Program Manager Laura Kitinoja.

Apart from the lectures and workshops, Aalto University Summer School customises a social program with student excursions for each summer course. During the DBMC, the students get to enjoy drinks at Clarion Sky Bar, make company visits to our partnering organisations, experience the best sights of Helsinki and conclude the course experience with a local culinary experience at one of Helsinki’s finest restaurants.

Finland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, and alum of the School of Business majoring in financial economics Elina Valtonen would do the same now as she did 20 years ago while studying: she would study a wide range of subjects that interest her and would also boldly venture into areas outside her comfort zone, as that is where the most learning happens.
